If a stranger gives you $1,000 with the stipulation that you give half to someone else, who do you give it to and why?

I’m still thinking about my answer.

I’d either give it to my nephew whose money is tight or a good friend who could use some extra for a vacation.

I am not aware of any of my friends and acquaintances in need of cash right now, so I would very likely give $100 each to five homeless people.

I would give half of it to Amazon.

chyna's avatar

^I understand you and Amazion are close! :-)

My wife. Why? Because she’s going to take half of it anyways…

kritiper's avatar

My older brother. Because he is and always was the greatest brother anyone could have.

My mom. Disability hasn’t gone up for those on fixed incomes, and though she works she physically can’t do a FT job thru cancer treatments.

My ex-husband. We’re still friends even though we live states apart, and he recently retired but is having to work part-time.

I would gift it to my butler Carstairs…supplement his wages with a tidy weekly bonus.
The old salt has earned it, bless his crusty toes!

Gosh. I can think.of so many people who could use $500….

chyna's avatar

I think I would give half to a friend who has a dog going through chemo right now. I’m sure it’s expensive and she would be grateful.

I can think of a couple of people who could really use $500 to keep themselves afloat.

I’d gift it to a friend of ours that is running an stray cats and dogs (and horse, donkey) shelter on a Greek island.
They are always in need of food.

My husband. (Is that cheating the give-away rule?)

chyna's avatar

^There is only one rule and that is to give half to someone else. So, no, that’s not cheating.

Nomore_lockout's avatar

I’d probably give it to my grand kids, split as evenly as possible. Or give it away to some homeless person, because I’m an easy chump.

anniereborn's avatar

I would give it to my fatherINlaw. He has helped me so much and in so many ways since my husband died.

stanleybmanly's avatar

I would give it to the first person I could be reasonably certain would give it back. The “why” requires no explanation.

seawulf575's avatar

Do we have to give half to a person or an organization? The answer changes slightly.

There’s a lady who I am friends with who has about 40 cats in her house that she is struggling to take care of, as well as some feral cat colonies. She has cancer and is dealing wtih symptoms from the cancer treatment, and she has a crappy job and financial struggles. I’d give it to her.

janbb's avatar

@jca2 Forty cats!!

jca2's avatar

@janbb: Yeah, it’s a little crazy.

janbb's avatar

^^ They don’t call them Crazy Cat Ladies for nothing.

Dutchess_III's avatar

I’d give it ALL to a roofer!

chyna's avatar

@seawulf575 It doesn’t matter. Whoever you want to designate.

stanleybmanly's avatar

Rather than give the money directly to the cat lady, I would give the cash to anyone up to cleaning up her house. Though I have no illusions about how far that 5 hundred bucks might go toward that goal.

KNOWITALL's avatar

@jca2 You may consider contacting your local rescue’s to get her some help. We do that here often for seniors in distress, and they will just go load them all in cat carriers and get them to the vet, fixed and shots and adopt them out.

That can’t be good for her health, I hate to hear that. :(

smudges's avatar

@KNOWITALL That can’t be good for her health…

Nor the cats’ health. That kind of situation is never good for the animals – never enough food, going to the bathroom anywhere, little to no socialization, ill-health, terrible air quality for them and the woman. I know she (thinks) she loves them, but hoarding of any sort is a treatable mental illness. When animals are involved the hoarder isn’t the only victim. And the stress on that poor woman, in addition to cancer, must be tremendous.

Brian1946's avatar

Wow- forty cats! That’s almost as much maintenance as 4 dogs! ;-0

KNOWITALL's avatar

@smudges Yeah I have three senior neighbors who all have more than five each, I get it. They get a lot of love and sense of purpose from it though. It’s a tough one to handle sensitively. Even doing TNR for them, knowing me well, was very touchy and went south more than once.

I don’t think that I know anyone that desperately needs money. My partner wants to purchase a quality painting for our living room. Perhaps he should receive it.

The monetary gift though, implies that at least half or more should be put towards providing aid to someone or a group in need; a “Pay It Forward” act of kindness.

My partner and I have no children. Our wills stipulate that any money left over at the time of our deaths go to a specific fund geared towards children. My choice would be to donate the $500 to them.

seawulf575's avatar

I’d go to the local Salvation Army homeless shelter and give it to them for their support.
