Does reporting on crime encourage it?

Asked by RedDeerGuy1 (24945points) June 2nd, 2021

I just watched a video on catalytic converter thefts and they explained how thieves profit from it. Also how to steal with cordless metal cutters.

Also when I was in watching a news video on crystal meth 30 ago, and they showed the parts needed to make it.

Also the media reported on how much cyber crime (ransomware) pays.

I believe not.
People who are willing, and able, to make money illegally, already know how bad things work, or know ways to get that knowledge.
People that think, after watching those programmes, “hey, that’s an easy way to cut a converter (and sell it)!”
Or, “wow, you only need that to make meth?!”
Those people obviously didn’t think of these things before, hence they are no criminals.
In general.

Generally speaking, no.

Terrorist groups depend on their acts of violence being reported. People are naturally risk adverse, so the reaction will be out of proportion to what was done, which is what terrorists want.
