What are some essential items for going mobile?

Asked by Milliboy69 (102points) June 25th, 2021

I’m going to be going on the road full time with my dog. What are some essential items to have in my car. I only have a Pontiac G6 but I will be removing the back seats and possibly the passenger seat. I also looking for suggestions on money earning ideas while I’m traveling. I will be saving up and buying a promaster van but it’s gonna take awhile. Any other suggestions are welcome too.

Why don’t you wait until you have the van and a little money in your pocket? Have you planned on how to feed the two of you and where to sleep and how to buy gas?
I’m more worried about your dog not having a place to exercise and get fresh food and water. It sounds like a fun and romantic idea, hitting the road with your best friend, but in reality, it’s a really bad idea.

Well he will have plenty of time and places to do that. Alot of the places we want to go are out in nature. We will be camping in the outdoors alot too. I do have a saving fund of almost $25,000 but my research says if this is going to be long term that I will need more money.

Maybe you can do deliveries for doordash, Postmates, or GrubHub when you travel through towns?

Some essentials could include first-aid kit, flashlight with extra batteries, soap, toothbrush with toothpaste and change of clothing. I’m sure you already know some of this.

First on the list of essential items would be YOUR perception on where the distinction lies between “going mobile” and “being homeless”.

Milliboy69's avatar

I don’t necessarily consider that homeless even though technically it is. I’ve been homeless before and it wasn’t by choice but traveling is different

Not homeless. Just houseless.

Go to a camping store. Even if you buy nothing there it will give you ideas.

Solar lantern for light. Battery or solar radio. Fire starter with container for cooking. First aid kit that includes pills for water. Thin towels that dry quickly, Blanket (you can use towels as layers for cover also). Rope and clothespins. Fold up chair. Mace.

I know there are RV videos regarding how much it costs to stay in places and suggestions for free stays. There might be something like that for you to watch if you need more information on that before you venture out.

Why do you want to travel right now? What about living with a roommate to save money and work for a while saving more money so you can buy the van you want?

Start a YouTube channel. That seems to be a thing now.

If you are looking remote work, try these:

Also, if you’re on Tiktok, there are a number of folks there detailing their “van life” experience from remodeling the van to how to survive on the road.

Van life is also big on Instagram.
