Locking your mouth shut as a method of losing weight. What could possibly go wrong?
The theory is that it would be able to open for drinking through straws but nothing larger:

Choking, shortness of breath, vomit – seem like potential dangers.
Is this brilliant or dangerous?

My first 2 thoughts on this is how does a person brush their teeth or take their medication if they are on meds. And usually obese people have other health issues that they do have to take meds for. A 2mm opening isn’t much at all.
In reading the article, participants lost an average of 14 lbs in about 2 to 3 weeks. I think the dangers would outweigh (no pun intended) the benefits. The patient is given a key to unlock his jaw in case of emergency, but how many people would remember to carry the key at all times or be too panicked to be able to use it in an emergency?
I think this would be like most quick weight reduction gimmicks and the person would go back to their old eating habits after unlocking their jaw.
So in a nutshell, I feel it would be too dangerous and wouldn’t want it on the market.
@chyna my feelings too – particularly in case of emergency.
A typical response. Treating the symptoms, because attacking the underlying causes (unhealthy food being cheap, cheap food being engineered to be addictive, healthy food too expensive, jam-packed days leaving no time to cook or to exercise, etc.” is too much effort.
I can not find it anymore, but it reminds me of the title of an article I saw recently, saying that the current day epidemic of depression calls for new anti-depressent drugs.
Well people would come up with excuses to unlock the device to eat that giant cream cheese pie.
Dangerous.
It seems like it would be a good idea to try duct tape first. Or even—how about this breakthrough?—just keeping their mouth shut voluntarily.
It would be more exciting if one used a clevis pin and cotter key.
On top of all mentioned above, people with food disorders wll still seek a way around their mouth being shut. It doesn’t help to only “eat” through a straw if one is now drinking ten milkshakes a day.
People who have had lap band surgery often do not lose weight because they continiue with high fat and high calorie choices, like Key Lime cheese cake instead.of an egg white scramble, or, hard liquor (more calorie and alcohol dense) instead of wine or beer.
