I bought a turkey for Thanksgiving last and didn’t have it due to Covid. It’s been in the freezer. Is it still good for this thanksgiving?

It will be fine.

I see no problem.

I’m sure it’ll be okay if you heat the meat to the recommended temperature.

According to “butterball” they are good for two or more years.

@Brian I don’t know how good American freezers are. Here we can only store things for a few months.

@Mimishu1995 I’m not sure it’s due to differences in freezers. I’d wager a bigger part of that has to do with the amount of preservatives we pump into our food here in the states. :/

- anti-microbial products (salmonella)
– sodium lactate
– potassium lactate
– bromelain
– ficin
– hydrolyzed protein
– monosodium glutamate
– papain

Although I don’t have a PhD in food storage, it seems to me that if a freezer can constantly maintain a temperature below freezing, then it’s as good as any other.

However, there could be issues external to temperature control that might cause differences in overall quality.

Also, what @raum said.

It’ll be fine. What time is dinner? I need to start making my travel plans. I’ll bring the green bean casserole!

ETA: @raum, I get organic, local, poultry and it is fine in the freezer for extended periods, so I th8nk it’s a question of temperature consistency.

I wouldn’t in my current freezer, I know my current freezer doesn’t hold temperature well. I know because during hurricane season I keep a couple of home made bags of ice in the freezer and the ice over time become fused together. You could do that test in your freezer.

In general I try to eat freezer food within 3 months to lower the risk of any freezer burn or ice build up. Probably, a year is not that unusual for people who keep venison in their freezers until the next hunting season, so I don’t see why this would be different, so most likely it is ok.

My own paranoia about food poisoning I wouldn’t eat it. My paranoia is just that, it is beyond most people’s usual caution.

@Brian @raum I don’t even have a freezer at home. I only have a fridge. Freezers are for people who sell stuff. Seems like Americans have a different way of using freezers :)

@Mimishu1995 The majority of our refrigerators have a freezer. Here is a website for refrigerators that you can see there is a freezer on the units. Just scroll down and you can see the models and click on them and see the different compartments on the refrigerators. A side by side, means freezer on one side and fridge on the other. French doors has fridge on top and freezer on the bottom. There are more options.

I would say over 90% of US households have a combo unit, and then some people (not that many) have an additional freezer that is separate for extra storage.

[Mod says] There’s such a thing as “too off-topic, even for Social”. Such as discussion of the secret awards, which was happening here.

Brian1946's avatar

@longgone Thanks for the explanation, although the “award” that was discussed is very easy to get and very hard to avoid. ;-p

I didn’t know that one was secret. It describes it on the list.
I know some are secret, like, um, I guess I’ve forgotten the names.
Anyway, I apologise for being in error. It was unintentional.

I should go check. Since returning with a new account, I may have some to catch up on.

Again, I’m sorry. Really.

@Mimishu1995 I have a refrigerator with a freezer. I also have a freezer in my basement. Since I am limited in how often I can get out, I stock up on things, especially food. An extra freezer is readily available in the US, because we have lots of game animals, so lots of hunters. When someone kills a deer, or wild boar, or other animals legal to hunt, it leaves them with a lot of meat to put away for later.
Some people spend much of their vacation time fishing, and then they have it stocked up for when vacation is over.
With extra freezers in such demand, it makes them popular with people like me who just stock up. I buy almost everything when it is on sale, so it makes up for the cost of storing it.

For a time, living somewhere else, I had one outside, by the front door. I had a lock on it. When I saw neighborhood kids wandering around bored, I would give them popsicles, then sit on my steps and tell them stories. That way I knew for at least a while, they were not causing trouble.
They liked my stories, and eventually it got tough to keep enough popsicles! :-)

Imagine how big a freezer a hunter would need if he got a moose!
