How do you crochet with short tendons in hands?

Asked by SergeantQueen (12977points) August 13th, 2021

I have short tendons in my hands. I cannot fully straighten my hands at all, and some of my fingers hurt when they are curled too far towards my palm (think like making a fist).
I struggle with hand crafts, as my hands get sore super fast even when bent. I know you don’t need straight fingers for crochet, but still I struggle with it. I have tried a few ways to hold the yarn and I either struggle with preventing my fingers from bending too much on their own and getting in the way of yarn, or my hands just hurt bad.

Same with embroidery but not as instant of a pain.

Any tips would be helpful. I bought a kit but it is too painful to try.

It is hard when one of my fingers need to be straight, because all the rest want to bend too far and it screws the yarn up.

I’m thinking it’s going to be really hard to do. It will be difficult to stabilize the hook, you would have to crochet at a slow pace I think. Maybe a thicker hook will be easier than a very thin one. The yarn usually is controlled with a straight finger, I see why that would be a problem also. There are crochet with one hand on YouTube. Have you thought about weaving? Maybe that would be less painful. I think you can get looms in a variety of sizes.

Can I ask, were you born with the short tendons? Or, as you grew up they didn’t grow at the same rate as the rest of your body.

@JLeslie I believe born with it. I remember it from a young age plus it is genetic
