Do avocados have a little green mind of their own?

And is it mischievous? I bought avocados for guac about 4 weeks ago. I have to buy them hard so I bought them about 4–5 days in advance. When I went to make the guac they were brown and rotten inside.
Last week, I bought avocados on Thursday for guac today and they are still hard. What gives?

Yes, I dislike this unknown browning until you open it.
To speed up the avocado ripening process, place the unripe avocados in a brown paper bag with an apple or banana for two to three days until they are ripe.
4 weeks is a good way to make sure they rot.
Best way to get them ready for guac is to put hard ones in a brown paper bag overnight. Then use them.
And God didn’t make little green avocados…
Oops wrong words.
@zenvelo Not 4 weeks. Read it again. Two different occasions. This is a second set of avos.
@Forever_Free Thanks, I just read that online too.
@chyna I think you got that right! The debbil made them!
@janbb My bad. But really, don’t buy “cados more than two days in advance of use.
@zenvelo That doesn’t work here as they sell them rock hard generally.
Huh. I never heard of them being affected by other fruit. I usually leave them on a counter that gets a bit of sun, until they seem to be getting a bit soft, and then they go in the fridge if there’s no occasion to eat them yet. Sometimes there are bananas or apples nearby… hmm.
@Zaku
Its a competition in a bag.
seriously Avocados produce ethylene gas, a plant hormone that triggers ripening. Bananas, apples, and kiwi fruit also produce ethylene, so you can use proximity to ripen your avocados quickly.
@Zaku
It’s a hormone thing
Little green Martian avocados might have a mind of their own, but not Earth grown avocados.
(I can’t figure them out either.)
Guac is made. They weren’t the ripest but they will be fine.

I have just learned to buy them by feel. I won’t buy them hard or to “squishy.” I tend to get it right 9 out of 10 times.
@Blackwater_Park That’s good if some are ripe but most of the time by me they’re all hard. Generally, my buying the hard ones about 4–5 days ahead works but not always.
I think you have to have at least a little bit of Mexican in you to truly tell when an avocado is ripe. There is a certain feel that avocado has and I just know it’s ready to eat. ; )
@tinyfaery Come onna my house then and pinch my avocados!
I ask for help when buying avocadoes.
@Zaku You are very welcome
I’ve heard you’ve got to pick the ones where the little nub on top comes off easily—then use them soon!
Timeline of an avocado:
Monday: Not ripe.
Tuesday: Not ripe.
Wednesday: Not ripe.
Thursday: Not ripe.
Friday @2:00pm: Almost!
Friday @2:01pm: Rotten.
@raum Yeah, I think they talked to their friends the bananas about that strategy!
@janbb That’s true! Though at least you can make banana bread with them. :D
