Is there a safe app that can tell me what the temperature is in the room I'm in?

Not that I know of but there are remote thermometers, I have three (freezer and two different sections of frig) but they display is a screen display.

Phones have heat generated so they are not able to give you temperature of the room.

First of all, the app would have to have the ability to sense the ambient temperature by itself.

I believe it would have to be tied to a smart thermostat like Nest that comes with an app.

Define “safe”. You mean it won’t break if you drop it? Or it cannot be hacked and manipulated?

Thermometers can be purchased at your local hardware store. You can buy them at reasonable prices and they are not connected to the internet; in fact they are not electronic.

Hacked and manipulated @Zevelo.

@Dutchess_III You can get thermometers at the hardware store that are not connected to the internet.

Most smartphones have temperature sensors within it to monitor the battery and processor’s temperature. In extreme temperatures (hot or cold), these sensors shut down the device to prevent damage.
To successfully measure air temperature, you’d need a sensor on the outside of the device, as far away from the internal components as possible. This setup wouldn’t be easy to construct without disrupting the design of the phone itself.
That being said, Some app developers have produced room temperature apps for the iPhone. They are still using the data from these internal temperature sensors and plugging them into an algorithm to estimate ambient temperature.
As stated, these temperature sensors aren’t intended for such use, and any readings the apps offer are only estimates and will have a high margin of error.

There are remote portable smart thermometers available that connect via wifi or bluetooth.

I was hoping there was one I could download to my phone, and the phone could take the temp.
There were a bunch online. I downloaded one, then something struck me as off so I uninstalled it.

I use Physics Toolbox Suite, but the temperature it shows is the system hardware temperature, not the outside temperature.

@Dutchess_III I’m not too tech savvy, but I didn’t think phones came with external temperature sensing devices. I wouldn’t think most phone buyers would be interested in paying for that. Software could not supply one. That would take hardware.

We have a little display thing that shows indoor and outdoor temperature from a sensor inside it and one on the porch. It’s not connected to a phone. Why do you want it on a phone anyway?

Dutchess_III's avatar

To win an argument with my husband @kneesox!
So if I get an external thermometer, what is the range that my phone still picks it up?

kneesox's avatar

@Dutchess_III ah, well, just tell him you polled Fluther, and everybody agrees that it’s as cold (or hot) as you say it is.

The thermometer I was talking about has nothing to do with a phone. The display is a little square LCD thing that just shows indoor and outdoor temperature for the location where the sensor is placed.

They sell smart thermometers that can be accessed with your phone.

Dutchess_III's avatar

What’s the range @ragingloli? A mile?

ragingloli's avatar

You will probably be lucky if you can still access them right outside your house.

38 feet for Bluetooth, worst case (edit); WiFi means you are on the Internet.

If you read the info in the link, it says:

App Alert – If it falls out of the range you set in SwitchBot App, you’ll receive a notification instantly when you are in Bluetooth distance (120m/394ft, unobstructed); with the SwitchBot Hub Mini (sold separately), SwitchBot Meter can be connected to WIFI, and you’ll receive a notification from anywhere, aware of the changes in your cellar, basement, etc. via your phone.

Here’s a Bluetooth from Wally World !

Why don’t you just get a thermometer?
