How accurate do you think this quote from a famous Indian Guru is?

Asked by ragingloli (52230points) September 24th, 2021

I think it is spot-on.
Democracy basically means government by the people, of the people, for the people.
But the people are retarded.”

I don’t think ‘retarded’ is the right word.

I would have used ‘stupid’. Or maybe ‘simple’.

I think retarded is the right word.
It means slow (of understanding, in this case).
I think the quote describes it quite good.
We ‘all’ vote (the IQ of the top portion of the electorate may well be lowered by the lower equipped, making the average low(er)).
I think I made a mess of that sentence, but I hope (and expect) that you will understand what I meant.
Then the politicians form a government, of other politicians.
And we know how stupid some politicians can be; we see examples of that on a daily basis.
Not to mention, some are lying bastards (f/m).

“retarded” is a pejorative word used against people with intellectual disabilities. It should not be used.

I would copmpare this to Winston Churchill: “Democracy is the worst form of government, except for all the others.”

Very accurate, the choice of word aside. In spirit, when the foundation is weak, what good can come out of the towering edifice it is supposed to hold?

I would go with the Churchill quote, posted above by @zenvelo.

It is true, generally speaking.

I’ll also agree with @zenvelo. I’ve talked to too many people not living in a Democracy to take it for granted, imperfect as it is.

Hmmm…yeah I guess. But he’s a little late :
“No one ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the American voter.” – H.L. Mencken, 1926

And he needs to work on his delivery :

But besides that, this psuedoswami was a total fraud who promoted a cult of religious cleptocracy, scammed followers out of millions, kept a fleet of 93 Rolls Royces while preaching “detachment and simplicity”, and got deported out of the US on criminal charges :

Still, if he was around today he’d probably find enough suckers to vote him into office some place.

It’s a wonderful world.

93 Rolls Royces? Damn, which Televangelist did he study under? @JLoon

@Nomore_lockout – HA! That kind of talent is a gift from Gawd.

Nomore_lockout's avatar

Indeed. Looks like an old hippie pothead, but hell I do too. But he is a very talented guy. And as said, he’s friendly and out going. Made a good impression on me anyway. Most of them think their crap don’t stink.

Nomore_lockout's avatar

@JLoon my apologies. Thought you were referencing Willie. My bad. Completely wrong thread even. Either a senior moment, or head up ass syndrome.

JLoon's avatar

@Nomore_lockout – Willie forgives you.

And he’s the only one I would trust with any kind of political power ;)

It’s a lot more accurate for recent United States politics, than it was for classical Athens.

The quote is accurate enough. Democracy is just a means of getting rid of politicians before they cause too much damage. It’s the Indian Guru I don’t trust. He seems photoshopped.
