Does anyone have any experience with ThriveWorks counseling?

Asked by CJGAGIRL1987 (6points) September 28th, 2021

I am having difficulty finding reviews for this company. I am concerned because they are subscription based and I am concerned about being overcharged.

I have not heard of Thrive Works. My daughter used Better Help and was satisfied overall.

I know thing specific about them, but there are several things about their website that bother me:

1) if you look at their ‘Join Our Team’ job opening page, they have more than a hundred – maybe more than that – positions open all over the country. That suggests to me that they are having a hard time getting quality people. Or that therapists don’t stay once they are there. Whatever the reason, it doesn’t give me a feeling of seriousness and stability. It looks like a McDonalds franchise.

2) They say they have locations (250 of them) all over the country – including my little suburb. I’ve never heard of them before. It makes me wonder if these are free-lancers, or is this a side gig? Do they have daytime jobs? It goes back to quality – what do they bring to the table?

3) Although the website shows photos of the counselors, it says nothing about their qualifications, other than their areas of work. I don’t know enough about any given person to begin to trust them.

Bottom line: Interesting idea and potentially useful to have afforable counseling, but based on their website, I see them as a franchiser and not a service provider.

This one is not familiar to me. My Firm provides Wellness through several outside organizations to employees.
More and more employers are outsourcing these kinds of plans to firms like this.
We utilize Virgin Pulse for our Physical Wellness and Lyra Health” for Mental Health Wellness

Researching ThriveWorks found several complaints. I believe they have a facility in Cambridge.
You can also search for local area therapists that specialize in your area of need. Read the reviews on them.
Finding services like this is not easy and sometimes takes visits with different counselors/therapist to find one that fits and you feel comfortable and confident in.
I am unsure what you have for any coverage, but that is an important part to know what each visit will cost you out of pocket. Discuss with their business office first to know your $$ exposure. I have personally found you can negotiate price based on your coverage if it is in netowrk, out of network or all out of pocket. The good organizations will work with you on this because their goal is your wellness and not their bottom line.
Typical costs in the Boston area are $150–200 per 45 minute session before insurance.
With insurance or negotiation you can get this down to $50–75

Good luck. Stay well.

You should also be able to explain your problem to a potential therapist and after 1 or 2 sessions ask them how long they would expect you need to see them. if they try to leave it open ended, that should be a red flag to you.
