I used to poke fun at people who get emotional while simply looking at a painting, but I ate some major crow today.
I recently visited Denver and went to the Denver Art Museum. I hadn’t looked at the lineup beforehand, so I was floored that it included Monet, van Gogh, Morisot, Degas, Caillebotte, Cézanne, Manet, Renoir, and Sargent, all in one show. I teared up within minutes. A wave of emotion just swept over me, and I was surprised by it.
Does art make you emotional? Why or why not?

I’ve never shed tears, but I’ve felt very strong emotions when confronted with gorgeous paintings. I’m glad you shared your experience with us.

I haven’t yet, that I know of.
I’m sure if I was hearing “Vincent” by Don MacLean, while I was viewing Starry Night, I’d be shedding.
Beautiful music definitely makes my cry, especially when it’s accompanied by beautiful movement performed by the artists.
So if beautiful sounds and movement can bring me to tears, it makes total sense to me that someone would feel the same about beautiful visual art.

No, but I remember when I first saw a copy of The Scream, my immediate reaction was strongly emotional.
No, but my wife did when I dragged her around the Louvre for eight hours. Her feet were killing her.
All kidding aside, I love museums and have certainly been flooded with emotions at the sight of some amazing things, but no actual crying.
No. Just amazed by human creativity, and spirit.
Rare, but when I know about the painter and the pain he suffered that inspired his art it can be emotional. Especially when the piece of art is very large and almost unfulfilling.
Not that all artists are suffering, but I’m just saying when that all comes together. I think I also need to be in the right place emotionally myself to be really driven to such a reaction.
Absolutely. Music can do that to me also.
Tears? Not that can recall. Goosebumps, maybe.
The David, by Michelangelo, in Florence, is so perfectly crafted that it is beyond words.
The Rosetta Stone, at The British Museum in London, holds its own brilliance for what it offers.
Nefertiti, located in Berlin, truly has a beauty that could bring one to tears.
Suddenly coming across Whistler’s Mother in Paris was shocking. It’s massive. (The US should have it back.)
Now that I think about it, I may have shed a tear or two when viewing the Egyptian pyramids. Does that count as art? They were purely a sight to be seen.
I have never been to an art museum.
It has this incredible power to stir emotions we might not expect. Denver Art Museum’s lineup sounds breathtaking! Art has a way of touching us deeply, whether through the colors, stories, or the sheer talent behind it. Personally, certain pieces hit me hard; they evoke memories or resonate with experiences.
