Right now, in the case of Gabby Patito, where he is after Brian Laundrie, the fugitive “person of interest”.
Law Enforcementesque?
Or clownesque?
To me, as a Dutch guy, this comes over as a relic from the Wild West.
Also, he’s “closing in on him” every day, yet he’s been busy now for about two weeks.
Is he incompetent, or playing the public and the media (traditional and social)?
Thoughts?

He has been a self-aggrandizing clown for 40 years. He’s also a convicted murder with prison time.
He’s an attention-getting, money-grubbing narcissist.
One, he loves the attention.
Two, he did gain some legitimacy in the past with the Max Factor heir capture in Mexico.

Three, he is well known and has quite a following in the US. While he is a character who has been in prison, he also has no qualms about getting physical or tricking fugitives into being captured. In other words, he takes his job very seriously.
Four, any information he has on Gabby’s case has been turned over to the authorities, he is not being a hot dog but feels his ‘fame’ could get more leads since many in the US are interested in this case and apprehending this alledged murderer.
In regards to your comment on the ‘wild west’, if you’ve ever watched any of his shows, catching meth dealers and those types of criminals when they want to hide, is not easy. It sometimes takes someone with his credentials (former convict) to build trust. Plus many people know him and that he’s compassionate. He always lets them have a smoke, call their parents/family, and gives them good advice once they are in his custody.
He specifically said that likely the FBI and law enforcement will kill Laundrie instead of bringing him to justice in court, and that’s why he feels he needs to get involved. He doesn’t use lethal weapons in his captures.
I’ve never watched his show but shows like that have a real following. I know he’s had some personal drama with his daughter making accusations about him – I haven’t kept track of it because I find that type of gossip annoying, but I know it’s out there.
As for catching Brian Laundrie, I feel that any help can’t be bad. Hopefully it’s effective.
He really believes his own story. But he isn’t quite as good at tracking people as he thinks he is.
I suppose I can’t fairly judge, because I have always assumed he was something like, as @elbanditoroso wrote, a self-aggrandizing clown, and I didn’t care. I’m remaining prejudiced that that is the case, and glad not to know more.
Oh, I have met an actual person who was a type of “bounty hunter”, more or less. Nice woman. Very unlike the TV character in practically every other way.
I do not understand why the media is eating this guy up.
The things I learn about on the internet. I have never heard of Dog the Bounty Hunter.
He’s a self promoting sleazebag, but he may bring more attention to this case.
then, I am sure, he will bring more attention to the cases of many missing girls of color
He’s a showman and he needs a haircut.
No opinion. As long as he can catch this creeper, let him have at it. Traditional Law Enforcement isn’t making much head way.
I feel bad that he lost his wife to cancer. Otherwise, I actively avoid anything he’s involved in.
Wouldn’t it be great if his work has positive results?
He’s got a good camera crew.
I think he’s a truly well-intentioned character (and I do mean character) who has done a lot of good things. I’m not sure why he dresses as he does or has the hair deal going on, but face it, would anyone have given him a TV show without the character aspect of him?
Elvis, Liberace, Michael Jackson, Ozzy Osbourne, Alice Cooper, Elton John, Cher…the list goes on of characters we’ve loved and hated over the years.
{{shrugs}} Live and let live.
Well he seems to be trying harder on this case, that your garden variety Sgt. Joe Friday type.
