Is drinking Emergen-C vitamin drink mix going to help me breathe better?

Asked by SergeantQueen (13147points) October 6th, 2021

I think I have an pneumonia. I have not been able to breathe right for a week. I have no other symptoms, so it’s not COVID. I feel the same way I felt when I previously had an pneumonia. My doctor says I should go to urgent care, but my parents won’t take me because they think I just need to drink Emergen-C and I will be better. But I think that’s bullshit.

Is getting worse and laying down/talking is hard because I can’t breathe at all.

Why do you say it’s not COVID? You can have covid and have no symptoms at all. You can have one symptom, two, three…

C is not going to help you breath better. A little C isn’t a bad idea, especially if you aren’t eating well, but It’s no cure.

If you lay on your stomach it might be easier to breathe, but if you can’t breathe well don’t wait too long to go to the ER, some people with covid decline quickly and need immediate care. Struggling to breathe is nothing to play with.

Also, some treatments work better when given early in the disease.

Do your parents not take you seriously because of past situations? That is not unusual for parents to think their children are being overly dramatic. If you really can’t breathe well I think tell your parents again.

That would suck if it was COVID. I am not getting tested and I haven’t been wearing a mask this whole time. I think It is Pneumonia.

I’ve never had trouble breathing from pneumonia. With a normal flu, Thera-Flu has worked wonders for making me feel better, but if I were having trouble breathing, not to mention if my doctor told me to go to urgent care, I would RUSH to urgent care…

(... well, if I had health insurance. Otherwise I might consider just dying to avoid a six-figure hospital bill.)

I do not have a car so
After my internship tomorrow they will take me.

There is a bad bronchitis that was circulating over the summer that was not COVID, but still hospitalizing people.

Do you have a cough? Or, just feels hard to breath?

I had a horrible bout of something that started right before the pandemic began, and lingered for months. I still am not completely recovered. It felt like my lungs were sticking together and I think I had pneumonia in my right lung. It was really scary. I did not have a fever or any other symptoms. It was following the flu, but weeks after the flu I don’t know if it was related. It was bad and still a mystery. I did take antibiotics for it. It’s a longer story than that.

I didn’t feel much need to cough I had to force myself.

A cough when I try to breathe too much but I have only coughed something up(mucus) twice.

SergeantQueen's avatar

Mainly just cannot breathe

JLeslie's avatar

Sounds so similar to what I had.

No. It would only be a placebo. My father offered me a Halls when I was sick as a child. If I didn’t get better then he would take me to the Dr.

If I remember correctly you are not vaccinated. COVID causes pneumonia. Are your parents vaccinated?

SergeantQueen's avatar

No one I know is.

Emergen-C has lots of vitamin C and zinc, both of which will help boost our immune system. BUT, that isn’t really what you need if you have pneumonia. Or Covid. It can help but won’t be enough to battle the harmful bacteria (or virus). Your immune system, if it is healthy, will eventually fight off these things. But until it does, the bad germs can do an awful lot of lasting damage to the lung tissue..damage that can last years…maybe for the rest of your life. I’m failing to understand why your parents are so reluctant to take you to the ER, though I’m also baffled why your doctor would urge you to go to an urgi-care instead of prescribing some good antibiotics too.

I’m glad you’re going to the doctor, tomorrow. As well-meaning as all these posts are, they are no substitute for the knowledge of actual medical personnel, not just anonymous folks on the internet with Google.

I hope you feel better, please let us know what they say.

@canidmajor Everyone on this Q seems to want the OP to get medical attention sooner rather than later.

SergeantQueen's avatar

My parents just don’t want me getting tested for COVID.

Also yeah but I bet its hard to prescribe stuff if you have no open appointments to see someone.

JLeslie's avatar

@SergeantQueen Why don’t they want you tested for Covid?

Tropical_Willie's avatar

I think her family doesn’t want to be quarantined, if someone has COVID-19 !

It will just spread instead !

Pneumonia is a symptom, not a disease. COVID can cause pneumonia.

@SergeantQueen You should not go to any workplace tomorrow. You might infect someone. Worst case, they die. Also, your lungs are precious and you’re way too young to accept the fate of damaged lungs for the rest of your life.

Do you have the money for a cab? If so, you could take one to urgent care. Please wear a good and well-fitted mask and keep the windows open, for the driver’s sake. You should also tell them on the phone that you have breathing issues, because some drivers won’t feel safe with you in their car.

Your parents should be taking better care of you, but you can also take care of yourself. Please do.

SergeantQueen's avatar

I am done and on my way to urgent care

JLeslie's avatar

Great! I hope you feel better soon. You can mention you have been having some psychological difficulties too. Maybe they can help.

SergeantQueen's avatar

Treating it as pneumonia and I am getting anti-biotics + an inhaler.

JLeslie's avatar

Did they do a covid test?

SergeantQueen's avatar

No they did not

JLeslie's avatar

^^Where do you live?

SergeantQueen's avatar

Wisconsin babey.

Caravanfan's avatar

Vitamin C and theraflu are useless for anything.

JLeslie's avatar

How are you feeling?

Kardamom's avatar

Why did they not give you a Covid test @SergeantQueen? That should have been the first thing they did, since you were presenting with Covid symptoms.

Why are you not vaccinated?

Why do your parents not help you with your health issues?

JLeslie's avatar

@Kardamom Just three hours ago a friend of mine who had COVID 5 weeks ago told me her story.

She and her husband went to a show, 90% of the attendees didn’t have masks on. A few days later her husband was sick, the doctor said it’s just a sinus infection, it’s not covid. No test! Then she got sick, and they finally both got tested. Positive for covid.

So frustrating.

SergeantQueen's avatar

I just haven’t gotten it.

@seawulf575 _”...boost our immune system…”

You can’t boost the immune system. If you’re otherwise healthy, then you can’t make your immune system stronger than it already is. You can get vaccinations to develop antibodies to specific pathogens, but if you’re not deficient in zinc and vitamin C (most people get plenty from their diet) then taking extra does nothing for your immune system.

^^I couldn’t have said it better myself.
