love this phone, but the power it exudes I'd disrupting speakers from 3 feet away. Are we getting to strong of an elects-magnetic field?

good question. I have this problem and it sucks. Only AT&T; has this problem, I think its due to the radio channels.
The speaker interference you're referring to is not unique to the iPhone and tends to be a problem with phones on TDMA networks where the transceiver switches on and off several times a second, transmitting at full power (as opposed to CDMA phones which transmit a continuous, low-level signal). The solution is to shield your speakers and speaker wire.
Like all mobile phones sold in the US, the iPhone has been certified by the FCC to have a specific radiofrequency absorption rate at or below 1.6 watts per kilogram, which is considered safe.
this seems to happen at my office. Anytime someone with a SmartPhone (blackberry, blackjack, iPhone) gets near a polycom, you'll hear some interference anytime the gadget radiates (e.g. checks for mail). I think it is worse when the polycom is idle.
They said polycom is aware of the issue, but it is not common enough or bad enough to fix. I think that will have to change.
I believe that it's the 850 MHz frequency range that is used in the GSM networks used by AT&T; (quad band); the other GSM carriers in the U.S. only use three of the four frequencies. That particular frequency is low enough on the spectrum to cause radio frequency modulations that can be picked up by unshielded cabling and audio lines.
This is a well known phenomenon for all GSM phones - not just in the US and not just AT&T.; It has spawned a number of third party products such as MoPods which give a visual indication that your phone is about to ring. See them at www.firebox.com/product/1547 I got one for Christmas and my iPhone makes it spin like crazy!
