Can you tell me about Apple watch?

Asked by JLeslie (65744points) October 31st, 2021

There are currently three models available on the Apple website. Series 7, SE, and 3. https://www.apple.com/watch/

I’m going to assume 3 is out.

Do I need to connect the watch to my cellular service for it to work as a phone? Will I be able to sync my phone and watch so I can control the volume on my phone with my watch? I have a friend who can do that, but is she paying for cellular service for her watch to do it? Does the watch have the same phone number as the phone?

What do you love about your apple watch? What do you dislike?

I believe the watch works in conjunction with and through your phone, like an extension or remote access for caller ID and to answer calls. Like Dick Tracy’s wrist radio. More complex functions are done through your phone as before, like for your internet functions.

I have a Series 5 watch. It can do all those things you mention in your question.
You should be an iphone user to get full affect as it is paired with the phone. Much of the functionality comes from the phone that is delivered to the watch as somewhat like a monitor is.
You can take calls on it, read and reply to texts, listen to music and control volume and change songs, see your trail map as you hike on the watch face.

I love the ability to see the phone calls on my watch and accept or reject with a touch. I like having my phone in silent mode all the time but seeing and feeling it on my wrist. This way it does not bother others around me.
I love that i can control things without picking up and unlocking my phone.
The health stats are nice relative to heart rate when you are active or looking at your watch to see your bike ride or hike status right there.
I like the GUI aspects being so simple.
I dislike the battery life. I have to charge it every day. I still cary my fitbit that I charge one a week.
I dislike that the health stats aren’t better utilized.
It is a costly device, but my company basically pays me for one every year if I use my health benefit dollars towards a device.

It’s pretty easy to link the Apple Watch to your cell phone. I’m no computer expert and had no problem.

I’ve had my Apple Watch for 3 years. Love it most of all to be able to talk on it for incoming calls. Also you can make phone calls and text messages on the Apple Watch. One time I locked my cell phone and wallet in my car. But I was still able to call AAA from my Apple Watch. Can easily call 911 if I’m injured and can’t reach my phone.

I like all the cool apps that I have access to from the Apple Watch.

I’m surprised how durable the Apple Watch is. Holds up very well to the abuse that I give it.

It does some weird things sometimes that I don’t like but nothing major. Sometimes out of the blue it will verbally inform me of the time of day.

So, the watch has the same phone number as my phone and you can use either one? Does the watch need to be near the phone to be able to make calls?

You can add watches to your phone I suppose that you could add phones to your watch maybe you could add a phone through anther app.

I’ve been out in my yard with my phone inside our house and received phone calls but the phone has to be near by.

It’s cool to be out in a canoe paddling at a lake and get a phone call and not have to dig the phone out of the dry bag in order to answer the phone.

@gondwanalon That’s important to know. I was thinking if I’m out at night I don’t have to bring my phone along if I have the watch, but from what you’ve written here, I need to have the phone with me for the watch to work as a phone.

What about the “find my” app? Is it on the phone? Can my husband see where I am if I’m wearing the watch even if my phone isn’t with me?

Apple Watch series 7 will function without your cell phone near.

This is a bit confusing but there are 2 versions (well actually there are a bunch, but 2 that matter regarding your question). The normal version makes/receives calls through your phone, on the watch. The phone needs to be nearby for it to work. The cellular version doesn’t need the phone nearby (it can even be off), but you have to pay for a monthly cellular plan with your carrier for the extra device. I always have my phone nearby so I can’t justify the expense. If you were into activities where having your phone on your person was inconvenient (a runner who doesn’t want the extra weight of a phone? or a surfer?), then it might be a nice feature I guess?

^^Is it the same phone number if you pay for the extra device?

@JLeslie I’m pretty sure it is.
