You can ask the university’s disability counselor. You might get an accommodation as a special student or take fewer classes, and go part time. Congratulations on improving your situation.

@Neelav “I am a schizophrenic…”

I would say “you’re a person diagnosed with schizophrenia,” and not allow your diagnosis define who you are. I’m not going to disrespect you by pretend to fully understand how incredibly challenging schizophrenia might be in your daily life.

I don’t know how severe your challenges are, how debilitating the side-effects of your medication(s) might be or how demanding the engineering program you’re interested in is, but if it’s something you have a passion for, I would absolutely encourage you to pursue it. Best of luck to you.

You can study engineering. Whether a specific program is right for you depends on the details.

If by feeling better you mean that you no longer have symptoms then there should not be any problems. John Nash was a major 20th century mathematician, and he suffered from schizophrenia early in his career.

Absolutely yes! I live with bipolar disorder, and I have a job and live quite comfortably. I take meds daily and go to therapy every other week. Most importantly, I meditate daily. Meditation is not emptying my mind. It’s more of a learning how to be calm while having lots of thoughts. Good luck!

@Neelav First, glad to hear that you are in a good place right now. Second, my sister is schizophrenic and studied biochemical engineering. Totally doable with the right supports.

Good luck!

@gorillapaws It really depends on the person. In the adult autistic community, identity-first language is generally preferred over person-first language.

I don’t see why not.

I honestly think you would fit in with other engineers that being the case.

I think it would depend on how well you can focus and study. You will know yourself best.

Of course. If you are regulated and on meds there is no reason you cannot have academic endeavors. Don’t ask; do.
