General Question

I wanted to post a comment on YouTube and it said I would be creating a channel. What does this really mean?

Asked by kneesox (4593points) November 6th, 2021

What do I get stuck in or with if I do this? Can I ever get rid of it? Does it link me to everything and everything to me? I just wanted to post one remark, not change my lifestyle or lose control of all my connections.

No, it just means that you are creating a recognizable account on YT. Only what you upload, what you put into your playlist and who you subscribe to will be publicly visible.

@kneesox

Would the comment you wanted to post be your first one on YT?
Have you created a YT account?

@Brian1946, yes, it would be my first. I haven’t knowingly created an account. Do I want to?

@Mimishu1995, what does “recognizable” imply?

@kneesox

If you create an account, don’t use your Fluther name, but do create another one that gives you at least as much anonymity as kneesox does.

Also, I think using an adblocker with your browser would give you a more enjoyable Tube experience.

So I think if you want to make comments at YT, go ahead and create an account.

@kneesox think of it like Fluther. You are able to view the site and all the questions and answers here, as well as people’s profiles. But you can’t comment on this site unless you have an account. And people can go to your account to see your basic information. That’s what I was trying to say.

@Brian1946, thanks. What ad blocker should I use? I tend not to subscribe to anything on the internet any more.

@Mimishu1995, your explanation is helpful. Thank you.

Ok, I did it, and it wasn’t hard or scary. I’m just suspicious of anything I have to register or sign up for online, but this didn’t hurt. Thanks, you two.

“What ad blocker should I use?”

What browser do you use? Firefox and I think Chrome have their own adblocking attachments, and if you don’t use either of those, yours might also.

@Brian1946, it’s Firefox. I wondered why you suggested using an ad blocker specifically with YouTube. Does it cancel the interruptions when playing a video?

I notice when I try to comment on a YouTube video it says I’m commenting with my real name, but other folks are allowed to use nicknames. That’s certainly a deal breaker for me.
