What are your favorite lines of dialogue from a movie?

Asked by Nomore_lockout (7612points) November 6th, 2021

Mine is from Dr. Stangelove – RAF Major Mandrake: “I’m calling the President at this moment! Give me a dime!” Unnamed Army Ranger Officer: I don’t have a dime, and what kind of uniform is that?” Mandrake – “You’re standing by a Coke machine use your gun, you twit!” Ranger guy: “Ok, but if you don’t get the President of the United States on that phone, you know what’s going to happen to you? You’re going to answer to the Coca – Cola company!” Anyone?

Here’s one: “Damn! We’re in a tight spot!”—O Brother, Where Art Thou?

I’m sure I have better favorites than that, but I can’t think of them tonight. That one always makes me laugh, and a couple of others from that movie, the one about “remains unaffiliated” and also “bag o’ hammers.”

“I do have are a very particular set of skills. Skills I have acquired over a very long career. Skills that make me a nightmare for people like you. If you let my daughter go now that’ll be the end of it. I will not look for you, I will not pursue you, but if you don’t, I will look for you, I will find you and I will kill you.”

And this, from J.F.K. : Where the John Candy character is trying to persuade his friend Jim Garrison, played by Keven Costner, to drop his case. He tells Garrison, “Forget about it, man! Oswald did it! You’re backing a dead man Daddyo, the Government’s still breathin’! And they’re gonna jump up and down on your head, and yell cocka doodle doo!”

@Forever_Free I always thought that quote was about badgers and never understood why anyone would ever need badgers! Thanks for elucidating.

@kneesox Also from O Brother Wher Art Thou, “We thought you was a TOAD!” and “He’s a suitor. He’s bona fide.”

Dutchess_III's avatar

As an aside, how long did it take you to realized O Brother Where Art Thou was based on the Odyssey? I don’t remember the scene where it hit me, but I started yelling “This is The Odyssey by Homer!”
Rick and his daughter were looking at me like I’d lost my mind. I’m sure neither one had even heard of The Odyssey much less read it like I did.

janbb's avatar

^^ I had known it already from reviews.

Dutchess_III's avatar

I had never seen the reviews.

janbb's avatar

@Dutchess_III Yeah, I understood that you meant that. I was just saying that I had known that going in. It must have been more fun to make the discovery yourself.

Sorry for the derail.

No derail, no worries. It’s only Showbiz anyway. Not pondering the evils of the world here : ) @Dutchess_III

I got one! It’s from Bad Boyz 2.
Mike is played by Will Smith.
Marcus is played by Martin Lawrence.
Marcus says “Mike, you’re an enigma.”
Mike says “Yeah. I can see that.”
I must have watched the movie 10 times before I caught it! :D

From Winter Light

Algot Frövik, Sexton: The passion of Christ, his suffering… Wouldn’t you say the focus on his suffering is all wrong?

Tomas Ericsson, Pastor: What do you mean?

Algot Frövik, Sexton: This emphasis on physical pain. It couldn’t have been all that bad. It may sound presumptuous of me – but in my humble way, I’ve suffered as much physical pain as Jesus. And his torments were rather brief. Lasting some four hours, I gather? I feel that he was tormented far worse on an other level. Maybe I’ve got it all wrong. But just think of Gethsemane, Vicar. Christ’s disciples fell asleep. They hadn’t understood the meaning of the last supper, or anything. And when the servants of the law appeared, they ran away. And Peter denied him. Christ had known his disciples for three years. They’d lived together day in and day out – but they never grasped what he meant. They abandoned him, to the last man. And he was left alone. That must have been painful. Realizing that no one understands. To be abandoned when you need someone to rely on – that must be excruciatingly painful. But the worse was yet to come. When Jesus was nailed to the cross – and hung there in torment – he cried out – “God, my God!” “Why hast thou forsaken me?” He cried out as loud as he could. He thought that his heavenly father had abandoned him. He believed everything he’d ever preached was a lie. The moments before he died, Christ was seized by doubt. Surely that must have been his greatest hardship? God’s silence.

Ted Striker: Surely you can’t be serious
Rumack: I am serious… and don’t call me Shirley.

Rumack: I won’t deceive you, Mr. Striker. We’re running out of time.
Ted Striker: Surely there must be something you can do.
Rumack: I’m doing everything I can… and stop calling me Shirley!

Not my favorite, but a great line:

From On Dangerous Ground

Jim Wilson: So I get thrown off the force! What kind of job is this, anyway? Garbage, that’s all we handle: garbage!

Pop Daly: Don’t you know? That’s the kind of job it is.

Jim Wilson: You’ve been doing it for sixteen years; you ought to know. How do you do it? How do you live with yourself?

Pop Daly: I don’t! I live with other people. When I go home I don’t take this stuff with me, I leave it outside. But you! The way you carry it around with you, you must like it!

Context: Jim Wilson is a police officer who gets violent at criminals. This dialogue takes place when he has just beaten up a criminal and his college is horrified by it.

Brian1946's avatar

@Mimishu1995

Is On Dangerous Ground one of your favorite film noirs?

Was the criminal a detestable murder suspect?

Mimishu1995's avatar

@Brian1946 I watched it a long time ago so my memory isn’t that good. I just remember that the scene happens before Jim is sent to investigate the murder. I don’t remember what the criminal does to provoke Jim so much, but I think it’s just a petty crime.

It wasn’t high on my favorite film noir list, but as I got older, I start appreciate it more. It forces the typical film noir hero to reconsider his way of violence, unlike most film noirs where the unemotional tough guy is the best.

They just staged a fight in prison and Arnold told Rocky he “hit like a vegetarian.” :D

Brian1946's avatar

@Dutchess_III

“Arnold told Rocky he “hit like a vegetarian.”

Bulls, gorillas, rams, elephants, and rhinos hit “like” vegetarians. ;)
I think if Arnold got hit by any of them, he’d be hurtin’ for certain!

Dutchess_III's avatar

I just thought it was funny.

Nomore_lockout's avatar

It was. But IRL I think Rocky could take out the Arnold in one punch. Sure wouldn’t care to do a pay per view for that fight. Likely a one rounder. (Brought to you by Gillette. Look sharp, feel sharp, be sharp. Mister, how are you fixed for blades?)

Rick: My health. I came to Casablanca for the waters.

Captain Renault: The waters? What waters? We’re in the desert.

Rick: I was misinformed.
