How can a doctor change specialties?

Asked by RedDeerGuy1 (24986points) November 9th, 2021

Like from psychiatry to emergency medicine?

I was told that it is hard to change specialties in medicine.

Does one need to start from scratch again? Or do some courses transfer to the new field?

The answer is it totally depends. If a psychiatrist wants to be an ER doctor then they will generally need to go to an ER or family practice residency.

Had a high school friend switch from pediatrics to ER. She went back for time in an Emergency Room residency.

Yes.

But be careful if they switch to veternarian.

Unless you’re a vet.

Then it would be totally fine.
