What's the best way to obtain insurance for a first-time car buyer?
My child will test drive a car next week with the aim to buy it assuming all goes well. They have never bought a car and so have never had car insurance. How do I help them navigate getting insurance for the first time?

Have her get quotes from AAA, State Farm, and Geico. All will give you free quotes.
Has your daughter been on anyone else’s (yours) insurance? That insurance will happily give her a rate based on moving to her own policy. Best to have insurance in place or ready to go before the actual buying of the car. It will be reuired if she is financing even a protion of teh cost of the car
My daughter went through this in August when she leased her first car. I had to send the info on my policy so she could give it to the agent, even though she was coming off my policy.
Call a few agents and get quotes. Then you pick one and pay or set up auto-pay, so when you register the car, you have an insurance card to prove you have insurance.
It will likely be very high since they’re a first time driver and young.
@Hawaii_Jake: You could also put your child under your insurance, which will likely make your insurance go up but may be somewhat of a savings for them.
@zenvelo That’s very helpful. They were never on my insurance, so they’re going to ask their mother. I also thought of AAA. I’m a member for roadside assistance only and was planning on having them join. They’ll call and inquire about insurance rates.
@jca2 They don’t live here. I will ask my insurance agent but suspect they’ll advise them to get their own policy since they live on the mainland.
@Hawaii_Jake: If you’re a union member, maybe check to see if your union has any agents or insurance that give special rates for members.
We added our kids to our insurance until they left home. The insurance company was happy to take them on independently. Otherwise, I would suggest sending them to an Allstate office to discuss. Allstate is great and they now sell non-Allstate products which for us (homeowners) saved us a lot of money.
Is your child still living with her mom? I agree with adding her (it’s your daughter right?) to her mom’s policy. Then eventually when she’s out of the house she will have her own policy through the same company, and beyond that she can bother comparing and searching for a different company if she wants to switch.
As far as I know there are no age limits regarding dependents on car insurance, it’s not like health insurance.
If she lives in her mom’s house it’s possible as a licensed driver her mom was/is required to have her listed on her insurance anyway. I’m just not sure how it works if your daughter actually owns the car.
Go to the BBB and see what it says about each car insurance company.
