Have you ever seen visions right after you close your eyes?

Asked by LostInParadise (32183points) November 23rd, 2021

Sometimes when I close my eyes before going to sleep, I see various images, usually of people and sometimes of a pattern. It is not a dream or hallucination. I am aware that the images are not real. Have you ever has such an experience? Could it be that the eyes are still responding to light that was there just before the eyes are closed?

That sounds like hypnagogic images which are experienced just before falling asleep. I experienced them quite vividly as a child when they kept me awake at night. They no longer bother me and I rarely experience them nowadays.

Like @flutherother < I remember having that but more when I was younger than now.

Yes. At least two types.

One type is not “light that was there just before the eyes are closed” per-se, but are built up signals on the optic nerves.

Another type is what @flutherother mentioned: hypnogogic experiences, which I would say are essentially dreams starting up before one is fully asleep. I have seen more and more of these the more I have developed my practice of paying attention to dreams and remembering, recording, and staying lucid and not waking up while experiencing them (whether asleep or not asleep).

Years ago, I would get them at least 30 minutes after sleeping. It does not happen to me anymore.
