Anybody here with parosmia? Is it worth a doctor visit?

Asked by SergeantQueen (12991points) November 30th, 2021

Things like pork, chicken, turkey, cheddar, salty foods, etc.. just taste NASTY to me! Like a lot of foods have a nasty taste to them. Certain smells are overpowering and make me want to throw up, and this is all new within a week or two. I had McDonalds chicken nuggets, which I have had a lot. Same nasty taste that has NEVER been there. Thanksgiving turkey—just horrible after taste. No one else agreed with me, it was just me.

It’s hard to explain the taste. Almost like rotting food. I am really struggling with eating, because so many things have this taste to them and they never did before.

I was at work, and the chicken and gravy I was making plus the hash browns (uncooked and cooked) smelled horrible too. And I checked dates and everything, it was fine.

I had mashed potatoes and gravy, and I have it from this place a lot. It’s not a new recipe or anything (I had it at work so I would know, we make it here) and it was SO salty I couldn’t finish it. No one said they had the same experience. It’s just me.

Is it worth a trip to the doctor? Can they even do anything??
Google says it’s Parosmia. But I can’t find much for treatment.
I am always hungry and eating and drinking is really hard for me… This sucks.

BTW, I am just sort of self-diagnosing it as parosmia so that one of you can google it and maybe get a better idea of what I am experiencing. I am not 100% that is what it is.

It sounds like a symptom of Covid. Have you been tested for
covid?

Here is an article describing this situation:

I know women who experience this when pregnant. It went away after having the baby.

Also, it’s probably worth getting a covid test. Or, even a covid antibody test if it’s been going on for more than two weeks. I’ve read reports of taste recovering and everything tasting rotten. Looks like the jelly above provided a link for that.

My brother-in-law just went through the same thing following a positive Covid test. He first started off not being able to taste or smell anything, got a positive Covid test, and isolated himself. I spoke with him yesterday and he said he hasn’t been eating because everything tastes like vomit or worse. He couldn’t touch Thanksgiving turkey, and he’s having a difficult time finding anything that doesn’t make him want to throw up.

Were you tested?

After I got Covid last year that’s pretty much exactly what happened to me. I’ve lost 20 pounds over it.

My first thought was Covid. It’s not the only possibility, but I would encourage you to get.a test.

I’m down to a handful of things I can eat. One is Taco Bell tacos….and I didn’t even like Taco Bell before.
I can eat mashed potatoes and gravy but only with brown gravy.
If someone tries to serve me a huge portion of something, even something I like, I get nauseated.
Hoping to get broccoli and cheese soup from Panara bread soon. If it makes me sick my life is truly over.

I am not going to get a COVID test. This has been going on way longer than covid lasts for.

I may have had it two-ish months ago and I assume it is just happening now, google said a lot of people had this symptom after the fact.

I just want to know if I should go to a doctor.

Yes, I would see a doctor about this condition.

If it is at all possible, also consider a pregnancy test. I had weird smell and taste issues that started a couple of months in.
Yes, go to the doctor.

It is worth a visit to a doctor and get it checked out.

You need a covid antibody test if it has been going on a long time.

Alterations to smell and taste are one of the classic symptoms of Covid and can persist long after you have got over the disease itself. It is known as long Covid and I would see a doctor about it.

You might be able to do a telehealth visit. Saves time (and money in some cases).

Follow-up report, @SergeantQueen?

SergeantQueen's avatar

Can’t do nothing about it!!! So I’m starving lol!!!!

I’m making pasta right now. Hopefully it tastes ok.
Fruit tastes fine.

@SergeantQueen, do you mean that you consulted a doctor who said there’s nothing to be done?

Dutchess_III's avatar

Yeah. You learn to make do with new eating habits @SergeantQueen. And eating tiny bites and small portions.
