Have you ever heard of anchovies as a pizza topping?

Asked by Nomore_lockout (7612points) December 5th, 2021

I was talking to someone earlier this evening, who said they hadn’t ever heard of it. A lot of places around Austin offer them up as possible choices on a combination pizza. Disgusting and nausea inducing, correct?

Love them, when we order pizza to-go, I’ll put anchovies from my jar in frig on my slices. Wife says NO ! No bony or salty fish for her.

janbb's avatar

Sure – all the time. It’s not my thing but not uncommon.

Sure. I first heard of that when I was in college, sharing a dorm with several New York and New Jersey people. That would be, um, more than 50 years ago, yikes.

Anyway, I wasn’t interested, but I assure you that there was plenty of enthusiasm among some of my dormmates, one of whom (from Yonkers) also liked to eat anchovies straight out of the tin when she got care packages from home.

To me, pineapple always sounded a lot more bizarre.

Well known topping for pizzaa; it was always available when I was a kid.

I never liked the taste as a pizza topping, so I have no idea if it is available these days.

Yup. I’m going to guess the guy you were talking to isn’t Italian nor from New York.

I’ve heard about it… the first time I heard of it was several decades ago.

Caravanfan's avatar

I love anchovies.

MrGrimm888's avatar

I certainly seen many pizza chains, have it as a listed topping.
I tried a bit of a pizza once with them on it. I don’t personally care for it.

@janbb Are you seriously saying a penguin doesn’t eat anchovies?

filmfann's avatar

I love it on pizza. My wife objects to it. or maybe me

rebbel's avatar

If topped with restraint it’s pretty doable.
Of course I’m Dutch, so not unfamiliar with salty licorice, which, if one uses their imagination, resembles anchovies.

chyna's avatar

Yes and I’ve tried it. Too salty for my taste.

My mother’s favorite. When my mom made home made pizza, she made an anchovy one for her and my dad to share, kids got stuck with just cheese pizzas.

I thought for sure this was a trick question.

Yes, I’ve heard of it.

ragingloli's avatar

Is that some sort of vegetable? A variant of artichokes?

Nomore_lockout's avatar

@SnipSnip Not a trick question. Evidently some people weren’t familiar with these nasty vomit inducing things on pizza. They haven’t missed anything, in my view.

kritiper's avatar

Why not?? They put pineapple on pizza…

Nomore_lockout's avatar

Pineapple is good on a combo pizza.

janbb's avatar

^^ Since you raised the question, I find the idea of pineapple on pizza vomit inducing. Although I don’t like anchovies on pizza, I think there is some validity to the choice but pineapple is just a perversion. But then, I live in the Northeast where we know pizza.

Nomore_lockout's avatar

@janbb Well, to each their own I suppose. One person’s vomit inducer is another person’s delish. I was just surprised that someone had never been aware of anchovies being offered up as a topping on a pizza.

Japan has a wide variety of pizza toppings, none of which “normal” pizza lovers would find normal. They top their pizzas with all sorts of seafood and seaweed, as well as Natto (fermented soybeans), mayonnaise, corn and bitter melon.

That list makes our anchovy topping seem mundane.

zenvelo's avatar

@janbb I have had pineapple on pizza in New Jersey and in New York. It is not an abomination at all. The only place I ever faced resistance to pineapple on a pizza was in the North End of Boston.

MrGrimm888's avatar

To address the pineapple issue. It’s typically paired with sliced ham, and referred to as a “Hawaiian” pizza.

Dutchess_III's avatar

Pineapple by itself is the yummiest topping. But the pineapple is in such big chunks. :(

MrGrimm888's avatar

^Agree. On rare occasions that I get a Hawaiian pizza,I pick off more than half the pineapple.

Dutchess_III's avatar

That’s not what I meant @MrGrimm888. They’re in big chunks and spaced so far apart it’s hard to get pineapple in every bite. I wish they’d shred it.

Where the hell you been?? Welcome home.

MrGrimm888's avatar

^Ah. My mistake Dutch. I probably would like it spread farther, and cut smaller myself.

I’m glad to see you, as well. I started a thread in Meta, about my absence. Feel free to ask me about anything there . But l would prefer not to pollute someone else’s thread, with the details.

Forever_Free's avatar

Yes. Love it on a pizza.
I also have had sauerkraut on a pizza.

^You are a pizza disgrace!

Tropical_Willie's avatar

@Forever_Free I had a Reuben Pizza at a local bar. Both mustard and Thousand Island salad dressing too!

@Tropical_Willie I would try it. How was it?

Dutchess_III's avatar

I had a veggie lovers pizza yesterday, and I had them add some pineapple too. Man it was good!

Nomore_lockout's avatar

@Dutchess_III I’ll bet it was, stop torturing me. Now I want me a veggie lovers too. Never tried that with pineapple but it sounds mouthwatering. Dang grands won’t eat anting but pepperoni.

nightwolf5's avatar

Yes. One of my favorite toppings, but a lot of places don’t have them. Not popular enough.
