Did your Christmas plans get screwed up at the last minute because of covid?

Asked by JLeslie (65789points) December 25th, 2021 from iPhone

At the last minute my husband decided we should go to his parents’ house for Christmas. I anticipated the last few months, but my husband can’t think ahead about some things. Like a typical wife wondering why I do what I do sometimes, I’ve gone along with it against my better judgment.

That’s not the screw up though. Yesterday, Christmas Eve day, my SIL found out five people at her work are positive for covid so she couldn’t come for dinner. I didn’t even know she was coming, but anyway it screwed up her plans and the expectations my MIL and FIL had to see their daughter for Christmas.

As a side note, and my need to vent, the positivity rate in the county I’m in for Christmas is currently 17%! Probably, it’s going up as I write this, and probably the flu is increasing too. Where I live the covid positivity is 3.6% and 8.3% (I’m constantly in two counties where I live, I’m a mile from the line).

My girlfriend and her family were all going to Princeton NJ for a large family Christmas gathering. Tuesday her sister called and said that the town had been hit by omicron and no one was going to gather.

So my GF adjusted and made plans to visit her son in Long Beach CA. Her son called Wednesday afternoon, he had a sore throat and congestion and had tested positive, so no visiting him.

I am having a quiet Christmas with all the family who celebrate it at a distance but I had been invited to close friends for Christmas lunch. That was canceled on Tuesday due to fears of Covid.

My nephew and his new wife won’t be coming to my sister’s for dinner. He has Covid.

My daughter and I were due to go somewhere for dinner on Christmas Eve, but I got a cold earlier in the week, tested twice, no Covid, but I really didn’t want to spend an evening coughing and sneezing at someone else’s house, especially these days.
Instead we are having a lovely lay time à deux.

“Lazy” time.

Yes. My son, who was to bring his family here for the weekend, cancelled due to the new variant.

@JLeslie My county is right there with you. It’s 16%, up from 12% on December 7th.

Someone I know may be stranded here because her American airline flight back to Washington state is cancelled.

I heard there are lots of flight cancellations. That sucks. Especially, for people who really put a lot of emphasis on their Christmas plans. Some people seem to get really distraught when they can’t be with family on Christmas.

It was all predictable.

So far no illness for me (knock wood) and I’m on my way back home now. Monday I’ll be in Orlando; there is also crazy high positivity rate there.

Yes. I had close contact with several people who all tested positive. I’ve been testing negative all week, despite some very mild cold symptoms. I’m not willing to chance passing it on to my wife’s aunt and father-in-law who are both cancer survivors, so we had to back out of our Christmas plans with my wife’s family this year. It’s a bummer, but infecting others would be a thousand times worse. Besides, how could you have any fun if you’re terrified of passing on a virus the entire time?

Nope. Covid-19 hasn’t had much affect on my life. Work changed a bit, but personal not at all.

I have a cousin coming to visit just in time to ring in the New Year. No masks.
There were no other plans.
