Did people fire shots where you live on Christmas Eve at midnight?

Asked by JLeslie (65789points) December 25th, 2021 from iPhone

A friend in the Memphis metro area wrote this on Facebook:

O! M! G!

People, it’s Christmas. Can we perhaps chill on the gunfire? Absolutely insane amounts. If you’re not hearing it, you wouldn’t believe it. Like wow.

Probably not the most appropriate way to celebrate.

Santa, you may wanna duck dude.

Seriously WTF?! What happened to peace on earth?

Is this a new thing being promoted in some circles?

No.

There are laws here that you can’t fire guns within a certain distance from residences.

No. Firecrackers for two weeks in July and New Year’s Eve but no guns.

Another friend in Michigan just said they did the same near her.

Craziness.

No gunfire but I heard fireworks last night. My friend said fireworks were set off right on her street around 11 PM.

Yes, plus fireworks.

“Florida men fire guns on Xmas: 10 dead (and 23 gators).”

Edit: Ah, Memphis….
“Memphis men fire guns on Xmas: Elvis seen alive!”

Yes, some nuts did.

It’s Texas. Heard gun shots all night long at work. I’m used to it.

Nope. Now New Years that may happen. We know one old timer with a cannon that works. Ha!

Not here.

They used to celebrate New Year’s Eve with gunfire, but some people were getting killed by the resultant high-velocity ballistic fallout.

Consequently, such celebrations were outlawed, so the last time there was any widespread celebratory gunfire was December 31, 1993.

I was at a friend’s house that evening. I left her place at about 2 AM, 1/1/94.
I was surrounded by the somewhat distant sounds of festive firearms discharges, so I rushed to get into my car for at least some overhead protection.
If it was still legal here, I’d probably wear a Kevlar or Lexel safety helmet for those “special” occasions.

2 weeks later, I dated my future wife for the first time. After our date, I dropped her off at her condo, about 4 hours before the 6.7 Mag Northridge earthquake.

@Brian1946 Where do you live?

My Michigan friend brought up being injured or killed by a stray bullet during this sort of thing, which I had been thinking about too.

Duck season was extended to Jan 2 in my area so you will hear shots from hunters near the lakes. But that’s only during daylight hours.
Nobody is shooting at midnight. That’s nuts.

Plenty of fireworks here

Someone set off firecrackers around 10 pm last night, Christmas Day. That’s all I heard. If shots had been fired the police would be circling the block.

LuckyGuy's avatar

There was a barrage of about 15–20 shots at 7:15 this morning.

I didn’t notice it at Christmas. Where I was last year, New Year’s eve was a gun fest. Hearing gunfire there was common all year. I’m in a quieter neighborhood now. We’ll see how much quieter.

Here’s an announcement from our Police Department:

“Fireworks/Gun fire. *New Year’s celebration – Celebratory Gunfire is ILLEGAL & DANGEROUS**. As New Year’s Eve approaches, the Los Angeles Police Department is launching its Citywide Gunfire Reduction Campaign. This campaign is designed to help reduce incidents of indiscriminate gunfire that have become a deadly New Year’s tradition in our city.

The Gunfire Reduction Campaign aims to advise the community that ringing in the New Year with gunfire will not be tolerated in the City of Los Angeles. Discharging a firearm into the air is a felony punishable by one year in state prison. Anyone arrested for discharging a firearm will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

*Shooting a gun into the air is a felony. You will spend up to one year in prison if you are caught.
*If you’re arrested for shooting a gun into the air, you will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
*If a stray bullet from your gun should kill someone, you will be arrested and charged with murder.
*People involved in celebrating the holidays by shooting their guns do not realize the danger posed by their actions.
A bullet fired into the air can climb up to two miles. When it falls back to earth, it can reach a speed of 300 to 700 feet per second.*
*If you ever see someone fire a gun into the air, call the police.
Celebrate the holidays safely and responsibly. Don’t fire guns into the air.”

*300 fps≈205 mph. 700 fps≈477 mph.

@Brian1946 What the hell is wrong with people?! If you want to shoot a gun, you aim it down into the lawn like a civilized person. Every kid knows that.
In this area many people do set off fireworks on New Year’s Eve at midnight. It does not have to be big or noisy. Just something. Even a sparkler will do.
