Should schools be closing again because of Omicron?
My hometown area is resisting it and there are so far no plans to close schools.
Chicago is apparently going back to remote learning after a vote by the teachers’ union and mayor Lori Lightfoot is furious and considering legal action against the teachers’ union as a result. I’ve heard of districts in other states also going back to remote learning.
What is happening in your area? What do you think should happen?

I don’t think they should close down the schools. As much as we know it’s just another form of covid19, we as a people has learned to live with it… And this Omicron maybe spreading faster then delta, but our immunity is strong enough to now handle it within a week or two… And it produces no symptoms… as far as I know… you won’t even feel if you got one..
I would say, kids have stayed at home for far too long.. Schooling is not just about education, but also for various physical and social activities. Kids going outside and doing physical activities is far safer than staying at home breathing the same air..
Sticking eyes on a desktop/laptop/mobile screen for remote learning is the worst way to teach kids… It’s fine for once in a while but for kids to look at the screen for too long is very stressing to the mind and eyes. They may start loosing focus and concentration abilities….
Well I had to say.. what was on my mind.. It’s just my opinion.
Schools are open here as far as I know. I live in Florida after all. I know Dade County (where Miami is) mandated masks again in schools. I heard several other counties highly recommended students wear masks, and I’ve seen news clips and it looked like almost every student was wearing mask in counties with big cities. Also, even if students aren’t mandated, some schools the employees are mandated to wear a mask.
Most of Florida is possibly a free for all though regarding masking, I don’t know. All the places I’m mentioning that have mask recommendations or mandates are the counties with large cities, like I said above, and dense populations.
I think it would have been wise to do remote school for one week since Omicron has a short incubation, and then go back to in-person education. Kids came back from winter break (vacations and family visits) and many came back home with covid, and if the majority of kids stay home for five days after winter break it could prevent a lot of spread.
Elementary age kids need a parent home with them though, and that is very difficult for some parents.
I was told by a county epidemiologist today that they are still contact tracing for school outbreaks.
Also, I’ve said this on other Q’s, flu is spreading too.
Well, we don’t have enough healthy teachers or substitute teachers. So how would we NOT close?
Yes. Omicron is running rampant. Kids, teachers, parents, and doctors are getting sick.
