Don’t mean to punt on your question, but it sort of depends:
• On the cream formula, and
• Your skin type
Some moisturizing creams penetrate deeply, while some lighter products stay mostly on the surface. It can get pretty technical:

Basically I use a sort of rule of thumb. I check the ingredients & if I see the cream/lotion contains any: lechitin, proplyene glycol, dimethyl isosorbide, jojoba, wheat germ oil, olive oil, lipids, or polyphenols – I know it’s going to absorb deep into my skin.
^ So any of those? It doesn’t have to be all of them? Very good to know.
@smudges – Right, any of them. You usually see them in different combinations depending on the product, and higher up on the list means more per volume.
But there are other good absorption boosters like azone, and lauric acid, along with organic essential oils including sweet basil, rosemary, ylang ylang, and lavender.
