What are good alternatives to Spotify?

Asked by raum (13402points) January 29th, 2022 from iPhone

Considering cancelling our Spotify subscription.

What are your thoughts on other music streaming services?

Apple Music?
Qobuz?
Tidal?
Amazon?

I love Pandora – although, full disclosure, I may be a bit biased. However, I did see on a Facebook post that a lot of other people were switching to Pandora as well.

I love Spotify, I don’t believe there is anything else really like it in my opinion. But Pandora is decent.

Actually, Rhapsody could be a good alternative.

Edit: Apparently it’s actually now called Napster

Music Piracy.

But honestly, I bought all my recent music from Amazon, because they allow you to download them as mp3 files. I do not use music streaming. Everything is stored locally. You simply can not trust any of them to provide access to the music you bought in perpetuity.

Tidal, in my experience, is good, with one fault.
The quality of the music (the ‘premium’ subscription) is high; I have compared it with Spotify (using headphones) and I could hear more in the songs/music from Tidal (they use “masters”).
The only pretty annoying thing was a regular Bluetooth disconnect from the app to my headphones (not a headphone issue; it never happens with Spotify).
Tidal, in the Netherlands, is a bit more expensive (the regular price).
I’ll stop my Spotify account (I might already have done so, since I usually stop it minutes after I subscribed to it.).
I always go for the trials, on whichever platform/app.
That’s usually three months for €10 (Tidal is now three months for €2….).
I also use Deezer.
Together with Spotify and Tidal that’s 9 months for not much money.
After that, rinse and repeat.

I used to listen to Pandora years ago. That would be my choice if I were looking for a new service.
I currently have Sirius, where I listen to music from the ‘40s.

janbb's avatar

@filmfann Sirius now owns Pandora.

The radio is free and has so many options. Never used Spotify, not sure what it is besides plays music.

I’ve heard great things about Qobuz. It has top-tier audio quality which means you needs a really good playback system. Not for a Bluetooth speaker but a multi-speaker system with a sub-woofer. Or top quality headphones.

Not cheap !

They have a Facebook web forum on Thursday afternoon (Eastern Time Zone).

Everyone I know uses either Spotify or YouTube Music.

I listen to a lot of the good old time Blues & I’ve never found much of that on Spotify. I listen to Pandora a lot. I used to go to Jango frequently but somewhere along the way, I forgot about that one and kept going back to Pandora. I just went back to Jango to verify that it’s still there and I’m listening to some good Tinsley Ellis right now. It looks like it is still free so I may be switching back to Jango

Napster is back?! After the lawsuit/s and having to pay $26 million I’m surprised it would still use that name.

SergeantQueen's avatar

@smudges

I believe those lawsuits were in like 2002.

I remember using it as a kid (my parents paid for it), then it renamed to Rhapsody. Now it’s back to Napster.

I use Apple Music. I like it and it works seamlessly with iPhone.
