Am I mentally ill?

Asked by alisaishere234 (5points) February 4th, 2022

I constantly scare myself and think everyone is reading my mind. Is this a sign of any mental health issue?

Nobody could tell you, over the internet, or from an internet post. No professional could or would even make any diagnosis from two issues that you outline above. If you think it’s a problem, or if it’s impacting your life in a negative way, seek out a therapist or a psychologist or a psychiatrist and speak with them.

Talk to your doctor.

Asking the question is a sign of sanity but believing everyone can read your mind isn’t normal and you should speak to a professional about it.

If someone I loved made that statement to me, I would be very concerned and strongly encourage them to speak with a mental health professional. I’m sure they can help you find a solution to your concerns.

Wishing you the very best.

No one on this site can diagnose you with any mental health problems only a qualified psychiatrist or psychotherapist can do this but only after having examined you.

However as far as I am aware and speaking as a total layman I do think what you are experiencing does need investigation.

I am sure there is nothing seriously wrong and with the right help any problem you may find you have can be very easily rectified.

There is nothing to feel ashamed about because things like this are a sign of the times.

Being that mind-reading isn’t a real thing at all, I would see a professional over that. The closest thing to mind reading is someone who is skilled at interpreting body language but not exactly the same thing as mind reading. They can only interpret if you are sad or mad or nervous or angry or happy. Moods but not actual thoughts. Now if someone knows you well and knows everything about you then they may be able to tell what’s on your mind.

Like if you had a date coming up and you seem happy but nervous. Then a person may be able to deduct that you are excited and nervous about the upcoming date. That doesn’t mean they actually read your mind. And moms really can’t read minds. We just learn to read our children well.

If you need to ask, probably not.

@kritiper, perhaps you are taking the term “mentally ill” to mean psychotic. Like experiencing pain accompanying physical illnesses, most types of mental illnesses, that might be classified as neuroses, generate emotional pain that is usually consciously experienced. Psychoses, on the other hand, often are not experienced as irrational, if all.
