Is selling discounted US stamps a scam or not?

Asked by janbb (63218points) February 8th, 2022

I keep seeing offers on FB ads for discounted rolls of Forever Stamps selling for $39 a roll. The seller is a site called USPSstamps.com or something similar. Actually, I think there are a few sellers now. It’s not the USPS because that would be a .gov. The comments all seem fake and are about how wonderful the service is.

I asked at my PO and they had no idea about this. I’m wondering if it is a scam or if DeJoy is trying to undermine the PO and allowing off-brand stamps to be sold.

Anyone know anything about this?

I Googled and got my answer:

“Are discount postage stamps legitimate?
Postal officials warn that deeply discounted postage stamps may be a scam. ... The number of counterfeit stamps being sold online is escalating, postal officials said Wednesday. Scammers are peddling them on social media, through e-commerce and third-party vendors.Jan 7, 2022”

I wonder if there are other answers as well. Since “Forever” stamps have been out there for years now, some people may have bought them at a much lower price (whatever was the first class rate at the time) and are now able to sell them at a discount that is still a profit to them.

I mailed a bill payment today using a “Forever” stamp that’s probably ten years old. I sure hope the promised “forever” holds true.

@Jeruba There were several posts about counterfeit scammers being prevalent now. I just picked the one to quote.

I don’t doubt that, @janbb. With people mailing less and less through the postal system, though, I’m truly surprised that it’s worth the trouble and the risk.

You will be interested to know that the official website for the Postal Service is USPS dot com.

@Hawaii_Jake Oh, you’re right. Thanks. But this site actually had some extra letters in the name.

And now of course, my Facebook feed is flooded with bogus ads for stamps.

A lot of these sellers are collectors. They buy rolls of stamps, open the roll, and remove certain stamps at the end of the roll (the end most tightly wound). Then they sell the roll. Sometimes they will say the roll is of 98 stamps rather than 100.

@janbb If you don’t want that kind of tracking and offerings on Facebook you can go to Facebook settings and then click Your Facebook Information then click Off Facebook Activity. You can clear what is already there and prevent anymore from accumulating.

@SnipSnip Thanks for the tip. I checked it and I had turned it off already.

I don’t do FB so I hadn’t heard of this. I do know that the post office website is USPS.com (not .gov) and has been like the since before DeJoy. I didn’t trust the site listed above to not be malware of some sort, so I did a whois search on Google. There is no website listed at this addy; however, this is a news report on 11Alive out of Atlanta saying it is most definitely a SCAM. If you go to the PO’s website, their Forever stamps are 58 cents each. Even their postcard stamps are 40 cents each. I didn’t try to verify that this news story is correct, but I most definitely wouldn’t be buying any stamps from the website listed. I’m just surprised that the PO doesn’t already own the site listed

@SEKA Thanks. As mentioned above, there were some extra letters in the address when I went back and looked at it and @Hawaii_Jake corrected me on the .gov. Also, as I said my Googling showed a number of articles that showed that there were several stamp scams prevalent now and I have seen a few different ones advertised on FB. I’ve flagged them as scam now.

@all Further thought, I wonder if the PO has any way of noticing if bogus stamps are used?

The government agency that I used to work for also had a .gov email address.

Since looking at this post, I’m now seeing spammy looking stamp ads in my FB feed too. Bad and blurry fonts…..

I just saw a USPS ad on Facebook showing old forever stamps on sale at Costco. 100 stamps for $55.75.

The USPS sells postage in bulk to stamps.com; they are like a bulk distributor of postage.

^^ Yes, there are legit retailers of stamps but these aren’t those. They’re selling them for $39.95, the comments are all glowing and the address is not right. It just looks too fishy. Plus the articles when I Googled.

@zenvelo: If you look closely at the Costco sign, it was in November 2021 when they had that sale.
