How safe is it to quit alcohol for a week after roughly 3.5 months of drinking every night?

Asked by SergeantQueen (12992points) February 14th, 2022

Google gave mixed reviews.

I’ll be going out of state in a month and I doubt I’ll have stopped drinking. So by the time I leave it would be roughly 3.5 months of drinking basically every night.

I doubt I can drink for that week I’m on vacation, will it be dangerous? Or would I be fine?

FYI: my doctor retired so I don’t have one right now. I asked a few Reddit boards but I am not sure if I’ll get a response.

I don’t need to be told what I’ve been doing isn’t healthy, I am aware. I just want to make sure I’m safe if I suddenly stop drinking for a week. Thank you.

Stop now. What are you waiting for? Maybe cut your consumption in half for a few days and then stop completely.

Do you want to feel like garbage on vacation?

If you’re addicted you could easily get DT’s (uncontrollable shaking) or a more extreme symptom like a seizure.

If you’re lucky you’re not physically addicted, but I’m going with you are, because you don’t want to stop and you drink daily.

Sometimes alcohol withdrawal needs to be observed by medical doctors. I don’t know how much you are drinking or how addicted you are. No one here can predict how your body will react.

Yeah, figure you can’t predict I just wanted to know if it was safe.

I just drink till I am drunk honestly.

@SergeantQueen Not a good sign. Getting drunk every night is incredibly destructive. Stop self medicating with alcohol and get some help for whatever is bothering you. You must be spending a lot of money on alcohol, spend it on something more productive instead.

I can’t say what I want to say because I know it will get modded

Ok. As long as you know. At least you aren’t in denial.

SergeantQueen's avatar

I am not in denial. I just also don’t want to stop that much because I have nothing else.

Maybe attend AA and you will start to have some interactions with people who are helpful. You can do it on zoom or in person. Have contact with people who understand. You can just try it zoom a few times and see if it interests you. You don’t have to have your video on, you don’t have to say anything.

Are you physically addicted? If so, then you will have withdrawal symptoms.

You say that you’re not in denial but you sound like you’re in denial to me. I think it will be safer for you to quit for a week than it will be to get drunk every night up to that point. I think that you may not get fall down drunk while on vacation but you will find it a lot harder to stay sober for that week than you think it will. Start by backing off a little bit every night or go cold turkey now and see if you can last even one night so you can gauge your reaction come vacation

Not only is it safe, it is beneficial for your health.
There are many positive effects of not having alcohol daily.

Good luck

If you’re honest with us about how much you’re drinking then perhaps we can help steer you to an answer. It may be safe. If you’re knocking back a fifth of hard liquor daily or drinking from sunrise to sunset over an extended period of time then it may not be and you’ll possibly need a supervised medical detox. If you’re killing four or five drinks at night and getting heavily buzzed then you can probably quit without issue.

“Safe” is relative. You won’t be damaged by quitting, but you may experience withdrawal which is pretty sucky. I would recommend researching that.

I think you’ll be fine, maybe feel like crap a few days. Drink lots of water.
I’m curious why you can get drunk daily except on vacation? For most of us it’s the opposite.

^Probably she will be stuck with parents or other people who won’t let her drink.

Go to https://www.aa.org/ and look for a place near you and go there to find help. You don’t need to give up alcohol for a vacation, you need to give it up for life to give your body a vacation forever. Alcohol doesn’t take your problems away, it just adds to them by making you more isolated from those who care for you. I don’t know what’s going on in your life but drowning in your sorrows just drowns you and hurts those around you who care. You need to find a way out of that. Best of luck.

Yes and no, stop drinking as much for a few days and keep doing that until you completely stop. You do this so your body doesn’t have a shook after stopping without slowly cutting down on the drinking a little bit.

I think you need a medical answer to the question of whether 3½ months is long enough for a sudden stop to be dangerous. I know it can result in seizures, but I thought that was after years of alcoholism. I saw an alcoholic through self-imposed withdrawal after decades of daily use. He had the shakes badly for three days, but no seizures. (There was plenty of other discomfort too, but he stuck it out and gained long-term sobriety.)

However, I’m doubting that you went from zero to sixty 2½ months ago.

The other question is whether you really want to be in withdrawal for your vacation.

Since (by your reckoning) you’re at 2½ months now, why not try, say, 48 hours sober and see what happens?

It’s best to taper if you’ve been consuming alcohol on a regular basis. If you’ve been drinking 3 drinks per night for a few months, try going to 2 drinks for a few days to a week and see how you feel. If you are ok, drop down to one drink for a few days and evaluate your state. Note: If you’ve been drinking much more than this, it would likely by best to consult a professional.
