On a scale of 1 to 10, how awful was "Ghostbusters Afterlife", with 10 being the most awful?

Asked by ragingloli (52231points) February 15th, 2022

I rate it a 7/10 on the awfulness scale.
I can not believe I spent money on this.
The movie was a horrible and dull slog to get through.
This is mostly due to the film trying to establish the characters, but the problem is, that they are not characters.
They are an assortment of pawns, pieces on a board whose sole purpose is to lead the film from one Ghostbusters prop to the next.
The only thing this movie is concerned with, is fellating the various imagery and objects from the original film, culminating with a supremely cynical cameo by the original cast, their only raison d’être being the delivery of more call-back dialog, and this horribly exploitative resurrection of Egon Spengler as a word-less force ghost.
The movie was worse than a mere nostalgia bait cash grab.
It crossed the line into necrophilia.

Today is my “haven’t-seen-it-still-gonna-critique-it” day.
I give it a 10 out of 10.

I fell asleep during it so unable to comment.

I rate it N for Not going to see it.

But I still enjoy critical reviews, and the pleasant feeling of hearing about a bad film I didn’t sit through. Thank you for your service!

I enjoyed the original & found each succeeding one to drop significantly. I had dropped the “Ghostbusters” franchise from my “must watch” list. Then when they came out with the all female cast, I decided to see where they took it. I was sooo disappointed that I swore off the franchise once again. I went in with the thought process of NOT ever watching “Afterlife” & nothing said there today makes me want to change my mind. It’s time for the studios to STOP being greedy & let this idea die a quick death!!!

It’s decent fan fiction. I have no idea why a script like that would be considered anything other than that though. It’s up there with some of the worst films but has not reached the bottom depths of films like… Highlander II for example. 6/10.

These studios are creatively bankrupt. It’s all reboots/remakes these days. We would never had had the original Ghostbusters if the studios back then were only doing “Casablanca”/“Gone With the Wind” reboots.

Sounds like it was far better than the Super Bowl halftime show.

@gorillapaws It’s an old formula that just does not work anymore. Several great movies from the 80’s were reboots. The Thing and the Fly are two that instantly come to mind. Those were 80’s remakes of 1950’s movies. I have yet to se a single recent remake be any good at all. Like in the last 15 years.

@Blackwater_Park
Some would count the recent Dune as a good remake. Not me, I thought it sucked.
Maybe Suspiria?

Hollywood is ruining so many movies and tv shows.
I really do not want to finish The Walking Dead for this reason.

I bought it, but haven’t seen it yet. I’ve been busy with Oscar nominated stuff.
I like Dune, but I’m waiting for part ll.

@ragingloli sadly It’s “good” compared to the David Lynch trainwreck version from the 80’s. The sci-fi channel low budget mini-series was the best so far.

I loved Afterlife. Sure, it wasn’t as funny as the first Ghostbusters, but I liked the down to earth tone and appreciated the likable characters. Also I thought the film had a ton of heart and emotion, the way they dealt with Egon’s character was deeply moving. To me it didn’t feel manipulative at all, especially since Ivan Reitman overlooked a lot of the making of Afterlife.

I just watched it.
On an awfulness scale, maybe a 4. The all women Ghostbusters was worse.
