Have you or anyone you know been a victim of fraud?

I think the problem with scammers and fraudsters, especially online, is reaching epidemic proportions without any clear way of dealing with it. What is your experience?

Couple friends have.

One by an unscrupulous tax accountant. Cost him 30K to get out of trouble with the IRS.

Another had his identity stolen…by his estranged brother. Cost him quite a bit to get out of that mess.

My husband got hit with identity theft. They bought a BUNCH of stuff under Rick’s identity. A truck and a poodle to mention 2 things.

^I can see buying a poodle would be high on my list of things to purchase. Lol

I cancelled a card due to $20 app charge. Bank says they choose random numbers and take small amounts then they get bigger. Yikes.

I answered an ad for old military rifles, in fair shape, still packed in cosmoline. At a good price, too. Convinced my dad that is was a good deal so he sent for one also. What we got was a non-working facsimile that would have made a bad wall hanging.

On a side note, we were hauling some junk to the dump, this “gun” included, and I propped it up against a fence post on the side of the road where someone would see it.

I’ve been a victim of identity theft. But not related to online activity. My brother and his friends. :/

I sent money to a vacation scam. They offered a full refund if you were not satisfied. You have to request a date for the vacation, but no date is ever available, and you don’t get a refund until after you take the vacation, so no vacation and no refund.

My credit card info got snagged at least twice so far. One card number got sold and used in Miami, the other got sold and used somewhere in S America.

I was checking our account once and there was a small charge made in Costa Rica once.
I yelled up the stairs “Where did you say you went yesterday?”
He yelled back “Salina.”
I yelled “This says you were in Costa Rica! How dare you go to Costa Rica with out me!”
He came to the top of the stairs and stared at me, LOL!

A few times. Choose who you bank with wisely. Ensure they detect and handle fraud protection swiftly and fairly.
What I have learned from it is to diversify my payroll deposit into at least 2 solid financial institutions. That way if one account is compromised, you have available funds in the other one while the fraud is researched on the first account.
