How long do you carry full coverage insurance on your vehicle?

Asked by chyna (51598points) February 23rd, 2022 from iPhone

Only while you owe on it? A specific time such as when the vehicle is 5 years old? The whole time you own it?

I drop Comp and Collision after about 6–8 years or when the value of the car is such that it probably wouldn’t be worth repairing if it was damaged. Liability of course, you keep forever.

With cars maintaining value much longer these days, I keep collision insurance on uch longer. I had a 2008 BMW that I bought used in 2015. I traded it in a year ago, so it was 13 years old when I got rid of it. I kept collision insurance on it the whole time I owned it, because any repairs from a fender bender would be much more expensive than my deductible + premum.

I had a 1999 Honda CRV for 18 years. I didn’t drop the collision on it until it was 12 years old.

My personal rule of thumb on collision insurance is to carry it as long as I would get the car repaired. If I won’t get the car fixed, then might as well drop the collision insurance.

Liability is required, so there is no choice,

Never.

Since money seems to have been an object my whole adult life I drop collision the second the car is paid off.
But what folks above are saying makes so much sense.
OTOH I save a lot of money on premiums that way too. Money that could go to repairs.

If you can’t afford to replace it then don’t drop collision. For me once the vehicle gets to a point where it’s like 12 years old has 150k miles or more and is worth less than say 8k then I’ll drop full coverage.

Never. I’ve wasted so much money because I never needed insurance. Guess I’m a good driver. I’d like some of that money back.

My car is 7 years old and in really good condition, so I’ll keep the full coverage for another year. Thank you for your answers.

Collision for me is about 600 a year, so it’s worth it for me to keep it. I have a 2015 SUV and it’s totally paid off, but definitely worth the 600 a year, which includes glass coverage and rental, for when the car is getting fixed (from an accident), they’ll provide me with a rental car.
