Am I expecting too much at work?

Asked by chelle21689 (7907points) February 25th, 2022

Last year I had to correct at least 10 data entry errors reported by employees because their SSN or DOB were incorrect. This has caused issues and/or delays to their health insurance and 401k accounts.

Going through reports, I happen to catch a couple more and as I was emailing the HR manager for help with something I happen to mention the data entry errors and if we can do something minimize mistakes like simply double checking work. I provided the list of incorrections as requested to she can see where the problem is coming from on her team. I mentioned it’s not too often but enough impact to really anger the employee. I get the heat for it, apologize to them for the inconvenience and try to calm them down it will be okay and I will try to expedite becauseit’s their health insurance so it seems important.

We are human and I know mistakes happen but am I expecting too much? Where I last worked where I did data entry I made sure to triple check lol there was never nearly this amount of errors but that’s just me.

Broad answer: yes, you’re expecting too much.

Rule #1: People are stupid and careless, in general.

Rule #2: It is next to impossible to change people that are stupid and careless.

Rule #3: Supervisors don’t generally care, because they are stupid and careless themselves, just a higher position with more authority.

Rule #4: Being a supervisor doesn’t make you smart.

Summary: Roll with it.

@elbanditorso lol so basically you’re saying employees just suck

@chelle21689 – yes. Not all employees at all companies, but as an aggregated group, generally yes.

And I say that as having been an Assistant Director at two major public agencies.

Are the employees not sent a confirmation to check and confirm? If not they should be, and there should always be a double-check system.

@knowitall No, I doubt it. It’s the team entering in data wrong cuz the assistant checked their forms and it didn’t match the entry.

@chelle Well I’d suggest it immediately.

At the large (5,000 + employees around the world) corporation where I work, we input our own information, It cuts down on data entry staff and also on data entry errors.

And we get annual reminders to check our infomration in case people have moved or have new phone numbers. Each employee is responisible for their own information.

@zenvelo Same.
We are also responsible for checking deductions for accuracy, too. Even my husbands smaller company does that.
