General Question
Should I Transfer Colleges Because My Major Is Being Cut After I Graduate?
I am currently a sophomore at a private liberal arts university. My school is on the smaller side but is still considered to be a medium-sized university and my major is one of the smaller majors at the school but still had a decent reputation before I started attending my college. By the time I started going to my school, it was clear that my program may have been taking a turn for the worse, as our department’s secretary had been laid off the semester prior. During my second semester, we were informed that we would no longer be having classes in the building designated to our program and were being moved to a smaller space in a different part of campus. Then, less than a month into last semester, we received the news that the university had “frozen” our major. This means that all students currently enrolled in the program can graduate but no new students will be recruited, essentially cutting our major. This caused panic from many students as well as caught the attention of professionals working in my field of study across the state. Since this move was made, several underclassmen, mostly freshmen, have either transferred or switched majors. My academic organization, which I am the vice president of, could soon be in danger of being unrecognized by the university due to low membership. I’ve been finding my academic experience to be rather and have considered transferring on several occasions but part of me feels that I should stick it out since I’ll only have two years left after this and I plan on going to grad school anyway after I graduate. I also don’t want to leave all my friends and start off at a new school where I will have to find my place at all over again. I feel like I’m in such a unique situation, what should I do?
