Should I Transfer Colleges Because My Major Is Being Cut After I Graduate?

Asked by RyanS123 (75points) February 28th, 2022

I am currently a sophomore at a private liberal arts university. My school is on the smaller side but is still considered to be a medium-sized university and my major is one of the smaller majors at the school but still had a decent reputation before I started attending my college. By the time I started going to my school, it was clear that my program may have been taking a turn for the worse, as our department’s secretary had been laid off the semester prior. During my second semester, we were informed that we would no longer be having classes in the building designated to our program and were being moved to a smaller space in a different part of campus. Then, less than a month into last semester, we received the news that the university had “frozen” our major. This means that all students currently enrolled in the program can graduate but no new students will be recruited, essentially cutting our major. This caused panic from many students as well as caught the attention of professionals working in my field of study across the state. Since this move was made, several underclassmen, mostly freshmen, have either transferred or switched majors. My academic organization, which I am the vice president of, could soon be in danger of being unrecognized by the university due to low membership. I’ve been finding my academic experience to be rather and have considered transferring on several occasions but part of me feels that I should stick it out since I’ll only have two years left after this and I plan on going to grad school anyway after I graduate. I also don’t want to leave all my friends and start off at a new school where I will have to find my place at all over again. I feel like I’m in such a unique situation, what should I do?

Last time you wanted to transfer to be with a friend. Are you testing your argument for your parents with us? Is the quality of your education being affected now? Since your major is being cut “after” you graduate, you gave no valid reason to change schools now. Be honest. Why are you really wanting to transfer?

This doesn’t matter unless you sense that you will be unable to become employed in your field or that it may cause you a problem getting into whatever masters program to which you say you aspire.

No one to talk to? You have an academic counselor; I would start there.

It doesn’t matter for Undergrad degrees as far as where it came from.
All that matters is that you graduate.

Thank you for trusting us with your situation.

You should be thinking about getting into a good grad school. The question becomes whether your current program is strong enough to make you desirable to good grad schools. Will you have superior recommendations from professors?

What field is it?

In my many years of work, nobody cared where my undergraduate degree was from. On the other hand, they were very interested where I went to grad school.

It does sound like a depressing situation though to see your major being given such short shrift. Only you can decide whether to transfer or not. Is there a professor in your department that you can get advice from?

At this point, I’d continue to graduation & then choose a really good college for the Masters!!!
