Why was the Nintendo DS discontinued?

Asked by vimead1 (600points) February 28th, 2022

The Nintendo DS was one of my favorite game consoles and I can`t figure out why they would ever need to discontinue it. The DS was doing so well (As far as profits and fan base goes).
What do you guys think?

The generation passed.

Nintendo released the 3DS, and that was the new thing to program for.

I’m sure a few developers made DS games for a few more years after that. No one makes games for the DS now because the system is not sold new anymore, and there is little to no market in making new games for the existing systems.

I guess that the Switch bit too hard into the handheld market? They decided to consolidate their game platforms, I suppose. Their handheld and main systems had become less distinct, so Nintendo thought it was a more profitable direction to go with the single, hybrid system.

Nintendo will always have a handheld system, so they could revive DS in a decade or two.

According to polygon Nintendo’s new “Switch” has replaced the DS. You seem to think that the profits of the DS were doing well. Since they switched, my guess is that they could see a trend of fans moving away fro the DS & they wanted to be ahead of the game (so to speak).

My kids each have both a DS and a Switch, and both have the DS collecting dust, but they love their Switch. My GF’s kids all have Switches, and use them to play against each other on the huge TV.

I have both a Switch and a DS, I use the DS more mostly due to my addiction to nostalgia.

One kid I work with has both & he’s put his DS away & is strictly Switch now. I’ve never thought to ask him why as I knew that I wouldn’t have a clue as to what he was explaining to me!!!
