If a book is in my library on the Kindle app, does that mean it is downloaded (Read details)?

Asked by janbb (63219points) March 2nd, 2022

Specifically, does it mean I can read it without being connected to wifi – like on a plane?

Yes, I believe so. It works for me. I use an actual Kindle, not an app on a tablet, and once a book is downloaded, I can read it anywhere.

Double check that it is not in the cloud before you leave, but if it is fully downloaded you can read without wifi.

@canidmajor How do I double check that? It says it is in my library.

Do you have a ‘Downloaded’ filter in your library? If it shows as downloaded, it’s on your device.

Try it. Take it with you on your walk or take it to the grocery story. If you’ve got it, you’ve got it.

@Jeruba No – not that I can see. I use the Kindle app on my iPad.

Oh – I did find the filter! i should be good then. I once got stuck on a plane with an undownloaded book and nothing to read.

Thanks both!

I just checked on my iPad, I simply touched the cover picture and it opened. I am not as familiar with the kindle app, but I’m pretty sure it downloads as soon as you buy/acquire it.

Sounds like you already figured this about, but anyway – Your library is a list of items you CAN download. You bought them.

I’ve used Kindle on a couple of PCs, a couple of phones, and one Kindle device. When I buy something new I am presented a dropdown list of which device I want to send it to, or “To My Library” which is no device at all.

@Call_Me_Jay I’ve got all that but the question was that once I had purchased a book but could not open it on the plane without being connected to wi-fi. So some step was missing.

Are you thinking I have to actually open them in my Kindle app to download them?

Just figured out how to check without going to the grocery store. I put the iPad in Airplane mode and the book I want is available.

OK, gotta ask (barely on topic…) what book?

The Love Songs of W.E.B. Dubois. A friend loved it but is very long so might be great for the trip. If not, I have lots of Trollope and other old favorites to re-read. And one paperback YA novel that a friend gave me.

@janbb To be double sure, put in Airplane Mode and then turn off Wi-Fi. Then check if the book is available in your devices library.

I thought I had downloaded a movie once and then when I got on the plane it wasn’t available.

^^ Good thinking. Yup – it’s there.

Thanks all!
