Is there a site that vouches for legitimate organizations providing relief for Ukrainians?

Asked by Jeruba (56058points) March 6th, 2022

In these cynical times, I can’t help seeing calls for donations to help Ukrainians as possible scams.

Is there some sort of clearinghouse or resource that identifies and posts links to legitimate helping groups—groups that actually use donations for purposes of relief for Ukrainians caught in Russia’s war?

I wonder this myself and I almost doubt it. I know Ukraine has a Bitcoin wallet people can donate too.

I’ve heard people are renting AirBnBs with the hopes that 1) the person who owns the place gets more money because Airbnb doesn’t take a huge chunk out and 2) it could possibly provide housing for refugees.

If people are resorting to AirBnb I question if there are even any charities that give substantial amounts to Ukraine.

There are many legit organizations helping Ukraine. You can donate to ones you know and trust like the Red Cross or Doctors without Borders I donated to the latter plus International Rescue Org and Mercy Corps. If you want to check out orgs, go to Charity Navigator org.

@Jeruba Charity watch as @JLoon Posted. I’ve also looked at several others and it seems that Catholic Charities has consistently good ratings with almost all of them. With at least about 90 percent of funds going to whatever cause they are raising money for.

I forgot to add that Unicef is also pretty good but they don’t have as high of a rating. This is their site for Ukraine. https://www.unicefusa.org/?fbclid=IwAR29RbXREOjOgjYSHElPYCDIzzYhusK7BTFlLJTz26CurGtMMBzo4OoYXCk

Yesterday I sent a message to PBS News Hour. If you can’t trust Judy Woodruff, who can you trust? I do. Walter Cronkite, I know, but he’s gone.

So I asked if they had a list of organizations one could safely donate to without worrying that it might be a scam. They replied:

Here is a list of trusted resources you can donate to.

Thanks for reaching out!

@Jeruba Thanks for that list. I couldn’t find Doctors without borders on the list so I wasn’t sure if they were doing anything in Ukraine. Glad to know they are.
