Has a Sergeant at Arms ever used the ceremonial mace?

Asked by RedDeerGuy1 (24945points) March 8th, 2022

To thump some howdy person on the head?

Maybe before it was ceremonial?

Don’t know about Canada, but there is a rule in the US that Sergeant at Arms has the authority to use the mace as a weapon against an unruly member. To my knowledge, that has never happened as most members had respect for tradition and complied once the Sergeant at Arms ceremoniously raised the mace

During the January 6 riot/insurrection, no members were in the chamber so the Sergeant at Arms didn’t have the opportunity to use the mace as a weapon. I don’t think that I would have wanted to face a PO’d mob with only a stick
