How much might a 1973 VW squareback be worth to a hobbyist?

Asked by Jeruba (56064points) March 12th, 2022

Just looking for a range.

I have one in the driveway. It’s no longer in running condition, but it’s fixable, in my uninformed opinion.

I have a hobbyist neighbor who has expressed interest in it. I can’t afford the distraction of researching it to find out what might be a fair price. I just want to know a rough ballpark so I don’t err by a factor of ten.

Do you have any clue for me, or a pointer to a quick resource that might keep me from making a really stupid mistake?

Thank you.

Could be $10,000 as long as all pieces are there !

Wow. Well, the battery isn’t there, and there’s a hole in the floor where it used to be, but I think all the other pieces are present.

On Craigslist there’s a1972 VW Squareback that runs and the body looks decent for $9,500.

Thanks, that really helps. I didn’t know where to start. Some years ago someone asked if we were interested in selling for $8000, and my husband wasn’t. He’s gone now. But it is in far worse condition than the examples above. Still, it’s a ballpark. I’d be willing to give someone else a bargain if I got one too.

Interested in any further clues you might know of.

Condition is going to be the main factor. Another is if you have a valid title for it. Anything VW and old is going for $$ right now. If you have a good relationship with your neighbor and you know they will take care of it then make them a good deal!

@Blackwater_Park, oh, I do. My husband bought it from his uncle in 1977. I had the title changed to me after my husband died.

My son drove it for a few years in the 2010s, and that’s when it got some rough wear. It’s been unused, under a tarp in the driveway, for more than 5 years.

I don’t know this neighbor at all, though. He just stopped by one day and asked about it. Frankly, getting anything at all for it is better than paying to have it towed. Before doing that, I would donate it to an NPO.

@Jeruba There are plenty of people wanting to work on old VW vehicles. You should have no problem getting ~8k for it.

Thank you! Thanks, all. I’ll let you know how it turns out.
