Should the media be relaying troop movements in Ukraine?

Asked by RedDeerGuy1 (24987points) March 24th, 2022

What is the point? It is like entertainment, for ratings, and not war. Should most of the war effort be classified?

I disagree, and your trivializing critical information is a childish reaction.

The press has always reported after the fact on things like troop movements, and if they learn of a movement by the enemy, they will share that to keep people informed of what is happening.

@zenvelo I disagree with your disagreement. Only the leadership needs to know specific details. Does the basket weaver need to know everything? For example Bin Laden was getting critical info from CNN decades ago. I guess that is the downside of democracy. “Critical information”, is intended for a need to know basis. At least until the war is over.

I also have a bug up my ass with radio news shows telling speed traps with the police. Finally the Canadian media has stopped giving info into making crystal meth.

The Russian spy who helped identify which billionaire oligarchs to be sanctioned was sold out by the media, when they gave his name for helping the west. God knows what will happen to him?

@RedDeerGuy1 IMHO Absolutely!

@RedDeerGuy1 The basket weaver in Mariupol should be made aware of anything to do with troop movements by the enemy, as should his uncle in Red Deer or Calgary who is trying to get him help. It will also help the basket weaver’s morale to know that the Ukrainian forces have cause as many casualties as the Afghanis did in ten years.

And the more the failure of Putin to sweep over Ukraine is publicized, the stronger the internal Russian criticism. You want to silence the press in the same manner as Putin has shut down any critical reporting,

@si3tech So you support Putin restricting the Russian press?

@zenvelo Ok then. I will leave it to the purview of the leaders, and diplomats to work this out. I’m just an average university dropout and I get more access for what should be classified info than an average citizen in WWII. I was just wondering, and not trying to start a flame war.

I was just asking an honest question, and you gave me a honest answer. Sorry for getting ticked off with your statement, the I was “trivializing critical information is a childish reaction” I actually got a chuckle and wasn’t offended.

@RedDeerGuy1 According to a military friend of mine, the location of the troops isn’t released for press use until AFTER they have moved!!! The military also uses that information to their advantage as sometimes info released is NOT the truth. So, relax & hope that everybody involved knows what they are doing!!!

@zenvelo Sorry I missed the words “after the fact ” In your first answer. Nothing wrong with being childish. We need all fruits in a fruit cup. I made the mistake for misunderstanding that the troop movements where not recent but rather old data.

The media should not be doing this and are only self serving in what they broadcast.
Did you notice that talk about Covid went to the backburner so they could feed us this sensation.
Don’t get me wrong. All this is wrong and we should be and become informed. They are just trying to put on what will get more viewers. That is their business model.

Which troops? The Russians or Ukraine’s?

RedDeerGuy1's avatar

@HP I don’t know. I was upset and turned the television off.

Clearly, you want the Ukranian population aware of the movements of its enemies through the country, if for no other reason than to know when and if to flee.

@HP I understand the media showing this around the World.
Its what media does.
However it csn give us all the feeling of powerlessness in doing anything to help other than donating money to the Red Cross and other Charities.
It in itself is frustrating to watch hourly on TV .I only go on once a day ( evenings) just to get the updates not repeated all day long.

Information shouldn’t be made public that could result in people being killed. Other than that, I like to be kept informed of what is going on.

This war has gotten everyone’s attention, and for good reason. I think most people would be upset if there was not a lot of coverage.

I agree. If this turns out to be the end of the world, we should all be in on it.
