They sure appear the same. My bet is the difference boils down to their address (prairie) vs. my lawn.
No.
Gophers are pests. Prairie dogs are wildlife.
But they both make a delicious snack.
Pests can’t be wildlife? And that snack business? Snack or meal?
According to Wiki they are a species of squirrel more like a ground squirrel. I had never thought about it; but in looking at their pic, they do look a lot like a fat squirrel but cuter!!!
It turns out they are different. The prairie dog has a bushy tail, while the gopher has one that is smoothed down.
Prairie dogs are larger than gophers, about 16”.
I did a Web search and found this Scroll down to the section labeled, What Animals Can Be Confused With Gophers?.
