Who's it going to hurt if Sean Penn smelts his Oscars in public?
I’m on his side but the gesture of protest eludes me Does he think Putin’s gonna scream “Oh my God no don’t smelt your Oscars!! We’ll do any thing if only you won’t smelt!!”

I have never been a big Sean Penn fan. Ironically, I thought many of his films smelt.
I think it’s goofy and bizarre and just another instance of celebrities looming huge on their own narrow horizons.
The way I see it, once the Oscar has been awarded, then it’s the receipient’s own business. Not mine. It seems to me that some Oscars have been found for sale on Ebay or similar sales web sites, or even garage sales.
Penn’s acting days are behind him anyway. The Oscars are for what he did in the past.
This is a purely symbolic move, by an aging actor who is barely remembered. That’s all.
Sean Penn has been in Ukraine and Poland making a documentary about the refugee crisis there. He has seen it at first hand and I don’t blame him for feeling strongly about it. Offering to melt down his Oscars is a bit theatrical but we shouldn’t judge him on that alone. His documentary may do some good.
Don’t think anybody cares.
Another case of Hollywood thinking they can make a difference with their “Art”.
I give him credit for his passion, but the stunt does nothing to help.
He has Millions of dollars. Put your money where your mouth is Sean.
Surely NOT me!!! He did a couple of good roles when he was a kid, but he’s stinky now.
@Forever_Free He just returned home from being over there & he’s feeling down right cocky right now!!!
The Oscars should be hurt and rightly so. I agree with Penn’s reasoning. At this point in time, Penn isn’t sure yet if the reason the Oscars did what they did with regards to Ukraine/Zelensky is the same one that will make him smelt his statue.
If he really wants to get rid of it and support Ukraine, he should put it up for auction and donate the funds. .
He can’t sell Oscars and his heirs can’t either. That is the rules from the Academy.
10.Academy Award winners have no rights whatsoever in the Academy copyright or goodwill in the Oscar statuette or in its trademark and service mark registrations. Award winners must comply with these rules and regulations. Award winners shall not sell or otherwise dispose of the Oscar statuette, nor permit it to be sold or disposed of by operation of law, without first offering to sell it to the Academy for the sum of $1.00. This provision shall apply also to the heirs and assigns of Academy Award winners who may acquire a statuette by gift or bequest.

Who cares? Putin probably doesn’t know what the hell an Oscar is anyway. Some celebs have a way over inflated sense of their own importance to the world at large.
Vot ish dis, der “smelts?” Fish?
Can’t ya smelts dat smelt?
“Cast in bronze and finished with gold plating, the award is among the most coveted in the film industry — and the Academy values it at just $1.3 days ago”
Academy Awards: Why the Oscar statuette is worth only $1https://kdvr.com › news › academy-awards-why-the-oscar…
So it doesen’t have that much actual gold in it.
Possibly just plated gold, like the veneer that celebrities have.
Im finished with celeb worship. I have been a John Wayne fan my whole life, but I just read that in 1972, he had to have FIVE security guys restrain him from attacking a Native American woman activist on stage, who had been picked by Marlon Brando (another POS) to reject his Oscar. I don’t give a damn about Wayne anymore, I’m super disappointed. I’d puke if I ever viewed another Wayne film again. His movie persona was a universe away from his real personality. POS scumbag. Fraud ass MFer. What Will Smith did was nothing in comparison. Just saying.
