Why would Putin do this to his country?

Asked by Dutchess_III (47126points) March 29th, 2022

Biden put out a meme that read “Russia’s economy used to be 11th in the world. Soon it won’t even be in the top 20.”

What is the man thinking?

It’s obvious to me that he is NOT thinking.

It appears he believed he could get away with it. I also think he believed time was running out for avoiding further NATO expansion.

I look at this as a reason for Putin to rid Russia of undesireables and getting rid of old equiptment, just like other countries GIVING Ukraine there old war machines.
I am assumming that he will soon pass a Bill to purchse the latest in War equiptment now.
Ukraine is his training ground for something much bigger in the future.

This question made me laugh. Look at what is going on here….......self imposed destruction by the government.

Putin is a self centered man so he doesn’t care unless it can’t do what he wants. It’s petty obvious that he has no brain.

It’s all about power. His power. Without it, he’s dead. He has said so out loud. He doesn’t care how many Russians die, never mind Ukrainians. Greatness of Russia, greatness of him. And immense personal wealth. That’s it.

I’ve been doing a lot of reading.

^My thoughts, too.

He stands to gain a lot from Ukraine natural resources.

But doesn’t tanking his own economy hit his pocket?

jca2's avatar

Power makes people do strange things.

@Dutchess_III: I’m sure Biden didn’t put out a meme. Someone probably made a meme and put Biden’s image in it, or Biden’s quote.

Remember when Putin used the FSB to stage bombings on Russian apartment buildings, blaming it on Chechen terrorists, and using that to get into power?
There is even a clip of him on television, bemoaning how “awful” those attacks were, and “how anyone could do this”.
The fucker does not care about “his country”, or the people living in it.

Putin doesn’t care about Russia any more than he cares about Ukraine, he only cares for himself and the blow to his self-esteem caused by his failing invasion of Ukraine. He would see Russians starve before admitting to a mistake.

Dutchess_III's avatar

@jca2 it’s on his FB page. Someone with access to his account put it up. You would think it would have been taken down if he didn’t authorize it.

Tropical_Willie's avatar

@Dutchess_III I don’t see it on Joe Biden FB page.

Tropical_Willie's avatar

Where is the meme ?

ragingloli's avatar

That is not a meme.
This is a meme

Dutchess_III's avatar

Well you have to scroll @Tropical_Willie. I’m able to find it easily.

jca2's avatar

@Dutchess_III: On the page it says “Biden for President is responsible for this page.” In other words, Joe Biden himself is not managing the FB page. It’s probably run by some fans and/or people who want to help him with his campaign. Joe Biden himself is not going on Facebook every day and posting. The thing you talked about is not a meme, as @ragingloli explains. It’s a post but it’s not a meme.

I understand that. But I would think they would have permission to publish stuff under his name.

@Dutchess_III,
> But doesn’t tanking his own economy hit his pocket?

Oh, no. He will never be among the hungry. Some estimates have him as the richest man in the world. He is no fool, and I don’t think he’s mad either. He will have billions in safe places. They’ll never find it all. Whatever might be frozen or even confiscated, he’ll have plenty left, and, if it comes to that, places he can go.

The Russian culture is profoundly different from ours. Putin doesn’t understand the West, and precious few of us understand him. That’s why I read books by Masha Gessen, as well as Karen Dawisha and Bill Browder and others.

Zelenskyy does not have to read the books.

According to this website, Russia is partnered with the WEF through the “Center for the Fourth Industrial Revolution”: https://www.c4ir.ru/

One of the stated goals for the Russia/WEF collaboration is “Participation in the formation of the world agenda for the development of digital economies.”

Maybe crashing their economy, which may lead to others crashing is part of a larger agenda that seems to be wide out in the open, but only if you are looking at it.

I just read this among the proverbs of William Blake:

The fox condemns the trap, not himself.

That would appear to apply to a lot of situations. It seems especially apt for Putin in Ukraine. I’ll bet somebody is already working on an opera by that name.

KRD's avatar

I’m not a big fan when it comes to operas but if they make fun of Putin then were do I get tickets?

Jeruba's avatar

Here’s a piece that makes the point about power.

@KRD, if you want humor about Putin, try SNL or the late-night satirists. The opera is going to be a tragedy.

KRD's avatar

@ragingloli That is a good meme. @Jeruba I think I will try SNL or the late-night stairsts.
