When was the last time you tried something new and failed?

Asked by janbb (63219points) March 30th, 2022

I took a class yesterday on cake decorating and I was miserable at it. I got sugar and buttercream icing all over the place instead of in the piping bag and did a lousy job on the cake. It was humbling but I powered through and didn’t beat up on myself (too much.)

They say you learn more from your failures than from your successes. It’s hard for me to do things I’m not good at so while it wasn’t fun for me, I am proud that I didn’t get too grumpy.

Your experiences?

I cannot make an edible pie crust. I have tried all sorts of recipes and techniques, a number of them labeled “fool proof”, and the best I can do is produce something that totally ruins any filling I have. I am otherwise a pretty good cook, but the pastry gods have decreed that this is a skill I will never master.

I also can’t master the Neti pot.

I took a cake decorating class. I was called out by the instructor for squirting more icing In my mouth than on the cake. I didn’t have enough icing to decorate the whole cake. I was a failure at decorating, but enjoyed eating the icing.

@chyna Ha! If you can believe it, our icing wasn’t even that appealing after I covered myself in confectioner’s sugar! And we made mountains of it.

All the time. whether in the kitchen with a new recipe or on the job with a new idea or process.
For me it is just learning and being better the next time.

I tried doing the Hula Hoop about 40 years ago, and I think I tried it again on December 19, 2021.

I have yet to determine the hip movement it takes to get the hoop to even start to spin around my waist.

However, it’s not that important to me; otherwise, I would have eventually bought a hoop for practice.

I started taking guitar lessons in 1958.
I would call my first day of trying to play a failure, in that I wasn’t able to play anything.
But I wanted to play, so my peeps bought me one and I practiced.
Eventually I was able to play songs well enough to enjoy my own playing, and feeling like I was taking part in the melodic beauty that drove me.
One time I walked around our neighborhood playing “Tammy”,
Unfortunately I couldn’t sing back then. It would have been nice if someone who could sing joined me on my walk, but Debby never returned my calls. ;p

@janbb @chyna

How important is cake decorating to you?

janbb's avatar

@Brian1946 Not at all important to me. I thought it would be fun to learn something about it. I’m a very good baker and never aspired to cake decorating so it’s all good.

Not important at all.

Salolm water skiing. Biggest frustration of my life. I was an athlete. I could do any physical thing I put my mind to. But not that. Makes me mad to this day.

Now I know never to take a cake decorating class. 2 failures in one lifetime would break me!

Day before yesterday I did the headstand, in yoga class.
I held it for half a second, then I fell.
I didn’t experience it as failing, as I know I will do it again, and again, until I stand indefinitely :-)

I bought a new sewing machine about 7 or 8 years ago, and my intention was to learn to sew. I know how to sew, the basics only, but I wanted to become proficient. I joined a national sewing guild and I attend the events but frankly, I am intimidated by the machine. I can do it if I want to, because it’s not that hard but it’s intimidating and therefore, not that appealing as a hobby. The problem is, if there’s a problem with the machine, I wouldn’t know what to do. Sewing machines are fussy and wonky. A good friend who sews well knows what the problem is and she knows how to fix it, but I don’t.

Almost a year ago, at my youngest granddaughter’s 7th birthday party. We went to a nearby amusement place with video games, pizza parlor, and – wait for it – roller skating rink. Never been on roller skates in my life, I guess Natalee (granddaughter) and her little friends wanted to see Paw Paw make a fool of himself. They weren’t disappointed. I fell on my butt and almost broke my ankle. Painful way to amuse some little kiddies. Funny as hell to them, painful and stupid experiment for me. Never again. A pox on roller skates.

I find it pretty much impossible to make a decent meatloaf. My mom’s were always great and I’m using her recipe but mine always come out dry or just don’t have a great flavor. Now that mom’s not here, I can’t even ask her what it is that I’m doing wrong

I am thankful for having a very supportive family who fakes it long enough to eat it and squeeze out a “that was good” at the end of their meal

Add more ketchup @SEKA.

janbb's avatar

I use a combo of dried onion soup, ketchup, egg and Italian flavored bread crumbs if that helps..

I tried to make chocolate muffins on New Years and they didn’t look well because they had a hole in the center. They still tasted good.

Oh! Dried onion soup! Yummy!!

I tried to learn Spanish with software. FAIL!

I just boiled some cheese and potato pyrogies. Was too cheesy. I have two jumbo packages of them. However the second bag is potato cheese and bacon. I will eat them anyway.

SEKA's avatar

@RedDeerGuy1 Maybe you’ll get lucky and the bacon will add some different and better flavor

RedDeerGuy1's avatar

@SEKA Yes. That is what I am hoping for.

Oh, man.

Sooooooo many things that I’ve tried for the first time that have ended terribly.

But I wouldn’t consider them failures. Kind of like the first pancake. It’s a learning experience.

I’d consider it a failure if I didn’t learn something from the whole process or managed to somehow never improve.

But that’s kind of impossible since I’m quite stubborn and difficult to discourage. (Just so long as it won’t cause bodily harm.) I’ll keep at something for a long time even if I’m terrible at it.

(Like cooking for my family. Sorry, family.)
