How might England have looked in modern times had the Great Heathen Army defeated Wessex?
Any fans of The Last Kingdom or Vikings are familiar with the story of how the Viking raiders came from Scandanavia and terrorized and conqured territory in Ireland, England and France. There were many kingdoms in England and all except Wessex were subjugated to the Scandanavians. King Alfred of Wessex held out in the forests and marsh until he could regain his strength and at the Battle of Edington (Ethandun) the Saxons defeated the Great Heathen Army and Wessex was saved.
But what would have happened if the Danes led by Guthrum had won tha battle and Alfred was defeated or killed? How might have the modern world looked?

The first thing that comes to mind is our language would be much closer to Scandinavian ones. It’s impossible to know how our societies would have evolved with a viking history dominating. Still, it’s an interesting question.
Maybe we’d have socialized medicine by now and be eating smorrebrod for lunch?
The history of England has hinged several times on the outcomes of specific battles which could have gone either way. If the wars you mention had gone differently, all of the subsequent history would have been different, but there is no way to predict which may.
However, I agree with Hawaii Jake that the English language probably would have had more Scandanavian influence that it does.
I think the Christianization of England (which that show focuses on) would only have been delayed slightly. Those pervasive Christian missionary efforts would have eventually had their way, as they did in Scandinavia. Sigh.
The Beatles would have died gloriously in battle.
Things might not have been that much different, with the Vikings replacing the Normans.
I doubt things would be that different, honestly. The wessex kings were eventually deposed by viking ancestors and everyone screwed everyone until you could hardly tell the difference. HRH herself has the blood of Alfred and Rollo.
Interesting answers, thanks.
