Does the Academy know the Oscar winners ahead of time?

Asked by zenvelo (39545points) April 8th, 2022

For years, the lead up to the Academy Awards presentation stresses that “the votes have been tabulated and kept secret by Price Waterhouse” and used to show two accountants carrying a locked briefcase.

In the aftermath of “the slap”, it seems the Academy knew that Will Smith was going to win for Best Actor so they asked him to stay. Has secrecy now left the Oscars?

Will Smith was favored by all the commentators to win; I don’t think that means that the Academy knew but perhaps they did.

I am guessing that the “Board” knew, as they would. Someone had to be the one to specify to the printer what to print. Maybe at the last minute (after the slap), the secret was out and they said amongst themselves “he’s winning so ______.”

They’va always tried to pretend that they didn’t know and that Price Waterhouse was the only ones that tabulated and knew the answer. I’ve never believed that

I’m not sure.
In 2017 do you remember that the wrong movie La La Land was announced and most of the people in that movie had gone up on stage and some guy came out and said Moonlight is the winner, not La La Land.
Very oddly handled.
