Why am I so thirsty when I wake up?

Asked by KRD (5274points) April 12th, 2022

When I wake up my throat is sore that I can’t cancel my alarm on my echo dot in the morning. I usually need water and it stops. it has been going on for about a week. I have a Rainmate IL in my room at night but I had it longer then my morning thirst. Do you know why?

Dehydration possibly as one requires about a litre a day of water.

Because you haven’t had anything to drink since you went to sleep?

I’m not sure why you’d be more thirsty than usual in the morning, though. What else has changed?

KRD's avatar

I usually drink before I go to sleep.

You need more water in your life. Rule of thumb is half your weight in ounces.
You also should drink a glass of water to start your day and to get your digestive system going. Add some turmeric to help kick start it.

I personally drink over a gallons of water a day. Your body is 60–70% water. Hydration is one of the most important things to do. If you drink Alcohol too close to bedtime can also be a part of it.

Maybe you’re sleeping with your mouth open & breathing through your mouth at night. You might want to start keeping a Yeti or Rtic style cup of water by your bedside so you can take a sip before speaking to Alexa!!!

@LadyMarissa Correct answer for the win!
I recently did a sleep study at a doctor’s office, and they asked about thirst in the morning, and said it would be related to mouth breathing while asleep.

I have a plastic bottle on my night stand. When I mean drink I mean water not alcohol.

Thirst can be a symptom of diabetes, or kidney problems. Not sure if those things would make you feel more thirsty first thing in the morning.

@Kardamom I don’t think I have diabetes. I don’t have any other symptom and it is just in the morning.

It could also be a seasonal allergy if it has just started.

Are you thirsty, or is your mouth and throat just dry?

Here are some possibilities:

1. Air is dry in your house and you are breathing through your mouth while you sleep.

2. Diabetes. I’d only be worried about this if you’re very thirsty all day, sounds like you only have the symptom in the morning.

3. Salty meal or snacks at night, or a lot of salt in general in your diet.

Because you haven’t had anything to drink for hours. You don’t go that long during the day, do you? I read recently that we should drink an 8 oz glass of water before bed.

JLeslie's avatar

@SnipSnip That sounds like a recipe to not be able to sleep through the night.

raum's avatar

My guesses would be either from mouth breathing or if you’ve been running the heater.

erebus9's avatar

When you sleep you may be breathing through your mouth, that will dry it out, not only that when you breath at all it can dry you out.

SnipSnip's avatar

@JLeslie It isn’t. We lose a liter of water each night just from breathing. We also lose from sweating, and of course, you lose water if you do get up to pee.

JLeslie's avatar

@SnipSnip Do you sleep through the night if you drink 8 ounces right before falling asleep?

Update: I woke up in the middle of the night and was thirsty but not as I am in the morning.
