How can I calm down?

Asked by KRD (5274points) April 19th, 2022

Last night I couldn’t sleep partly because my stomach was acting up and I was scared of something. It freaked me out and I read a book. I believe it is because of some scary videos I watched earlier. Someone told me that I should not watch them anymore but I like watching scary things so much. Is there a way to watch scary videos and not freak out?

Don’t watch them before you go to bed. Try watching them earlier in the day. If that doesn’t help calm you down, you’ll have to make a choice.

If you have to watch scary movies before bed, take some time afterwards to watch sweet kitten videos, or puppies or otters. Who doesn’t love a sweet Otter?

Get yourself some REDS, man. Barbiturates. Barbital. DOWNERS, ya know??

Or you could take a couple of shots of something like spiced rum.

Yeah, great advice; booze or drugs….
Really, @kritiper?

It sounds like you answered your own question. Agreed, do not watch them before bed or if you are alone.
My daughter just told me the same thing. She loves scary movies and laughs at ones like Scream or Saw as a protection mechanism. It still messes up her fear thoughts in the middle of the night. She would often wake me at 2 in the morning because she was overthinking due to watching that kind of stuff. She decided it was best not to watch them before bed and it has helped her.

I love true crime shows and scary movies, but there are times when I’m just not in the right frame of mind for them. Unfortunately, I don’t always know this until I go to bed in the dark and I’m constantly opening my eyes to make sure there’s no one in the room with me.

Maybe try to sense ahead of time if it’s ok or not. If you’re in a great, happy mood, it might be safer to watch one than if you just heard on the news that there’s a serial killer in the neighborhood. Jk And like others said, watch earlier in the day. I sleep with a nightlight; maybe that would help you, too.

The first thing to do is to determine if the videos are the cause of the sleep disturbance. See if not watching them allows you to get a good night rest. If so, then make adjustments.

“I believe it is because of some scary videos I watched earlier. ”
I think that some people personalize the viewing process in that they look at it as if it was real rather than JUST a movie.
Changeing your persective as if you were a Director for a movie or even one creating it would.
Its a mark of a good writer,Director,Producter if it seems realistic when the audience can see themselves in the characters, which makes it beleivable.

in other words look at it technically instead..like how they made it realistic and all the facors involved to create it.
